Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Good to see the student again. During the SAT session, we continued to address math concepts (factoring, remainders, polygons, ratios, and inverse/direct proportionality) and verbal (vocab). To do this, we switched up the session a little, doing specific drill problems from "hard" problem sets online instead of from the "easy-medium-hard" problem sets in the blue book. Then, we reviewed her vocabulary flashcards. During the math session, we went through best practices for simplifying exponentials and radicals. I assigned her some practice problems to do in preparation for her exam. For this weekend, the student has a full-length practice exam."
"Today, we focused initially on difficult math concepts/problems (e.g. functions in conjunction with shapes, simultaneous equations, special right triangles, and more). The student has a much stronger handle on these as a result of our practice. She blazed through a good amount of latter-end math problems in the practice sections. For the remainder of the session, we focused on the essay, reading through examples and noting their general structures. The student understood by the end how she should approach the topic questions and formulate her examples. We will continue to practice through difficult passages and math problems for tomorrow morning's session."
"We covered the math subjects, primarily probability, geometric translations, functions and word problems. We worked on teasing information out of such problems, as well as general skills/knowledge that can make problem solving more efficient. The student was motivated to learn. For Wednesday, they are to complete at least the math sections of Practice Test #1, if not the whole test (save for the essay). They may complete each individual section separately, but must complete each individual section timed."
"Today was an all Math day. She performed very well on the two math sections. She is currently performing above average. Her math skills are good enough that she shouldn't be getting the questions wrong, but her desire to get to all of the questions in a section means she misses easier questions to simple mistakes. We will continue to practice strategies to focus on completing questions correctly after carefully reading."
"During this session we covered a SAT Math section. She struggled with doing some of the questions on her own but was able to understand most of them after we reviewed them together. I left her with a formula sheet to review. I left her with the next SAT Math section for next Friday."
"The student is extremely bright, and seems well prepared for the tests. He has done well on previous tests, but sometimes struggles with vocab. We looked at some specifically inference practice problems in humanities sections. I asked him to complete a diagnostic test for me for next time, when we will look at main idea questions."
"The student and I worked on a social sciences reading passage from an ACT exam to talk about reading comprehension skills for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. This passage is quite dense, and so we took the whole work line by line in order to break it down. For the most part, he has great skills in organizing information. We talked about identifying how a sentence is structured in terms of its transitions to signal/highlight how its contents are supposed to assemble in relation to the individual sentence and the other sentences around it. We will transition back into SAT passage work with the critical reading sections from practice exam 9 next week."
"We met up today to go over a practice test that the student had taken. As expected, he did best in the math section. The biggest area for improvement is still his reading comprehension, which is what I want to focus on during our next session. My plan is to assign timed sections for him to do during the week, the go over reading sections with him when we meet in person. Additionally, I would like to do another practice test before he takes the test again in mid March."
"We went over geometry today. He was able to do the more complicated problems without issue once given formulas. Next time we are going to do graphing."
"Last week, I assigned the student three different sections to do as practice and we went over the questions today. We also went over additional sentence completion questions and two short critical reading passages. For homework, I assigned her a critical reading passage and new vocabulary."
"The student continues to progress with math. Today I encouraged her to draw diagrams to illustrate word problems as a complement to her strong spatial thinking, which helped to reinforce her hunches. She was much more forthcoming with her logic and answers than in previous sessions, and took pride in demonstrating her knowledge of formulas for volume of a cylinder, interior angle measure of a polygon, and 45-45-90 right triangles. We took a look at some SAT vocab flashcards; many words were foreign to her, but she took my cues and correctly identified roots and prefixes to help her determine positive/negative connotations and parts of speech. I gave her some preparation and pep talk for her first practice essay, which I am expecting at this Thursday's session."
"We worked through a long reading passage, two medium length comparison passages, vocabulary practice, and an essay outline. We also reviewed commonly tested grammar rules and did paragraph improvement and sentence improvement practice questions."
