Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued to work on vocab, math and writing. We went through a large number of practice problems."
"The student and I began by going over 8 free-response math questions. I reminded her of appropriate math concepts, and I also emphasized looking for the final answer - not overthinking the problem or solving it all the way through unless necessary. We then did an improving paragraph section of the multiple choice writing, reviewing elimination strategies and grammar concepts. We ended with eight multiple choice math questions, again reviewing strategies, and discussion of general test taking tips. She has been a great student who listens and remembers lessons, and I believe she will show improvement on the PSAT."
"I met with Student 1 and Student 2 for another session of PSAT tutoring. In this session I tried to simulate a testing environment with both of them doing the same practice test under the actual time limits. We did a section of reading and a section of math. Both did reasonably well on both. However Student 1 made a mistake in skipping one question and put many right answers on the wrong lines. He will need to be more careful in the future. We should have one more session of practice before the actual test."
"We focused today on the writing section and the math section of the exam. The student was assigned to do a practice exam to prepare for the upcoming test."
"Today we worked primarily on the math section. The student continued to practice parsing out word problems, focusing on geometric angle problems."
"We went over the student's answers to the three sections he completed (one Critical Reading, one Writing, and Essay), and he did much better on the Critical Reading and Writing portions. We went over his Essay and I gave him tips on what the graders are looking for. I then had him work on a Math section, which we went over. He is doing better at the beginning of the section (not making as many simple mistakes / reading errors), and we went over some of the Algebra/Geometry principles covered in the harder questions. I told him to complete the Essay and first 3 sections of the next practice test (#10) timed, so that we can go over it on Sunday."
"We started the session by reviewing the student's performance on a practice PSAT. He had done well; his writing section was perfect and both his reading and math sections were in the low 70's. We checked out the incorrect questions in both sections. For the math, I reminded him that it is helpful to substitute a specific value for a variable in certain types of questions. In reading, we reviewed unfamiliar vocabulary and examined the reading passages to understand why the correct answer was correct. After that, we turned to vocabulary practice. He worked through 48 SAT-level vocabulary words. He first completed a fill-in-the blank exercise. (He missed about 10 out of the 48.) We then reviewed and discussed the words that he either missed or was unsure of. The student then completed a second quiz that asked him to match a vocabulary word to a synonym or near synonym. This time, he only hesitated on about two of the words, and would have guessed their synonyms correctly. For the final portion of the session, we worked through two reading sections of an SAT, focusing on the vocabulary. As a final piece of advice for the student, as he prepares for the PSAT this next Saturday, I strongly suggested that he take advantage of the learning tool vocab website to practice vocabulary on his own, and to consider working with a couple of friends at the end of the week, when he will have a short vacation from school."
"We covered: general PSAT overview, including practice in all sections, with focus on fill-in math questions and common writing section mistakes."
"During this session, the student and I started to go through the critical reading section of the PSAT. We focused our entire session on the sentence completion questions, and he did extremely well on all of the test questions towards the end. I assigned him to do a practice test sometime this week so we can gauge his progress and continue accordingly."
"The student is taking the PSAT this week, so today had a heavy focus on getting as much practice in as possible. We went through his weakest parts of all three sections, starting with passage-based critical reading questions and improving sentences in the writing section. His abilities in these two sections were excellent when we started working together, and now he is well on his way to a great score in both of these sections. He works diligently and quickly through long passages and rarely misses any important information. He still has some slight challenges with some of the math, but there is obviously a lot of improvement. We worked with percentages again, and he did all of the math correctly for the problems we did. I believe he will do very well on his PSAT, and with continued practice he won't have anything to worry about when the SAT comes around."
"We did vocabulary and grammar review for the student's preliminary admissions test on Wednesday. I assigned her work for next week's session; an essay, and further work on English grammar."
"Today we reviewed the reading section of the placement test. The student did really well. She could use some work on building vocabulary, but she has very strong reading and testing skills. She is very bright."
