Gresham, OR Organic Chemistry tutoring
The student and I reviewed several homework problems for her class, focusing on projectile motion, dimensional analysis, and Newton's laws (force). I believe we had a few lightbulb moments, including the problem regarding the weight in an elevator and acceleration in projectile motion!

Today the student and I went over a couple of E&M questions which used the first of Maxwell's equations, Gauss' law. We solved for the electric fields created by lines and sheets of charge. Her class is of an exceptionally difficult caliber, and I am very impressed with her ability to keep up. Good on you.

The student and I went over progress of the weekly assignments. He finished his practice exam for PreCalc and is waiting to finish the unit test. In his work and power lab, he learned about the relationship between power and its measure in horse power (hp). He is still having some problems with the definitions of physics terms - vector, scalar, energy, work, power. He had some trouble differentiating between weight and mass conceptually. We will continue to work on that. At first, he was quiet when I asked him questions about the meaning of physics terms. After talking about clearing up their definitions and concepts he was more confident in working problems.

The student has a science project coming up. She has to get her topic approved first. We spent our time discussing the components of the initial experiment she wanted to conduct. There were too many variables for it to be a workable experiment. After a lot of discussion, I was very proud to see the "lights go one" and hear her come up with an elegant and simple experiment to do at home. She is going to discuss the force of friction provided by various surfaces. We continued to discuss the independent and dependent variables she would identify in the experiment. We honed the idea into a more simple but powerful experiment for her project. As a tutor, I was delighted to see the moment when she grasped the constant.

We reviewed the student's chemistry exam discussing concepts such as conversion of mass to moles using molar mass, conversion of volume to moles using molar volume at STP, Avogadro's number and its meaning, converting percent mass to empirical formula and vice versa, and ended with a discussion of stoichiometry and how that pertains to determining limiting reagents and reaction yields. We began a discussion on polynomials as well as his other topics in algebra 2. I will send some practice problems regarding stoichiometry, unit conversions, and empirical formulas which we will discuss for our next session along with continuing our algebra 2 discussion.
