Gresham, OR Microbiology tutoring

We talked about moles and how atoms combine to form compounds in whole number ratios. I helped the student with his lab using this concept to find an empirical formula. He understands how they combine but was a little uncertain on how an empirical formula works. We'll work on that in our next session.

We focused on prokaryotic gene expression and a cancer case study. The student had the materials that had been presented in class, so we talked through the PowerPoint slideshow. She seems to have grasped the concepts of enzyme inhibition, repressible operons, and inducible operons very well. We then talked through her cancer case study, and she was very engaged on it and had good ideas for how to approach the questions. I provided some strategic guidance for how to think about attacking the more open-ended questions, which helped significantly.

We continued our preparation for the student's physics exam, this time focusing on kinematics, projectile motion, forces, Newton's laws, and springs. We worked through each problem gradually, with me introducing physics concepts along the way as needed. By the end of the session, he seemed to have a solid understanding of the material.

We covered buffer solutions, trends of the periodic table, and other miscellaneous trends. The student has a really great foundational knowledge of chemistry--I think she is definitely shaken by the lack of organization and the lack of in-class exercises that she is experiencing this year. It was clear that she just needed to work through problems with someone who could give her a vote of confidence. Initially she was saying a lot of "I don't know" but slowly she was more willing to voice what she thought, with a justification.

Today we worked primarily on phylogenetic trees. The student already seemed to be familiar with constructing them, so we covered points such as terminology, reading them, and identifying different types of groups. In the course of examining her practice questions, we also went over some other concepts, such as homology, analogy, ancestral vs derived characteristics, and parsimony. We also went over a variety of test-taking strategies. She indicated that she found problems with an abundance of text intimidating, so in a practice problem, I had her read the question first to identify what information she needed to get out of the text. She liked that method. I also recommended having scrap paper to either draw out diagrams or make notes on multiple choice questions so that she can eliminate wrong answers without later second-guessing why. Another suggestion was to come up with examples for any terminology she had trouble memorizing, as that can spark recognition.
