Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"She and I worked on substitution and elimination problems to get her ready for a math quiz tomorrow. She did well and caught a common mistake she makes when she was corrected substituting a solved value to check her work. This realization was a great step for her because she saw that many of her past mistakes had resulted from a very similar error which she now plans to permanently correct."
"We went over remainders again as a review. She understood remainders and how to find them but had some trouble with long division. She was left with some homework on remainders and long division and next time we will continue working on long division again."
"The boys retained the work we did with parallel and perpendicular. We had some great discussion about how many lines you need to describe them as perpendicular or parallel and how many lines you need to describe them as vertical, horizontal, and skew."
"We went over questions like the ones she'll see on her test on Monday: rates and converting units. We talked about making the numbers easier to work with so she could decide what unit to use before moving on to the more difficult numbers. We then practiced multiplication and division, where she is showing great progress."
"We worked on the student's school math worksheet, working out multiplication problems with 2-digit numbers and factoring numbers to prime integers, recognizing when the mathematical solutions could be represented using expressions with exponents. We also began reading the first couple of pages of his new mystery book."
"Worked with the student on her practice math test. She's doing a lot better in a number of areas, specifically linear combinations and percentages, but still struggling a little bit with fractions, specifically dividing by fractions. I asked her to do another practice math module or finish this one for next session and we would review any problems she was having trouble with. In order for her to be able to take an actual module soon, we are practicing as much as possible (1 in between each session and 1 during each session) and reviewing the major concepts she has difficulty with. She has definitely made great strides since our first session, and I expect her to be fairly well prepared in two weeks at the longest."
"In this session, we reviewed for quiz on quadratic functions and their graphs; spending a lot of time on completing the square, both for solving polynomial equations of the second degree and writing them in vertex form for graphing. The student seemed well-prepared by end of session."
"Good session. The students did not have school today, so we used the opportunity to get Student 1 a few steps ahead of the class with the next topic and some of the weekly homework assignments, while Student 2 and I reviewed and practiced a lot of "mental math" and exponential calculations."
"We went over some proofs using the Archimedean principle, inequalities, and properties of sets. I have not seen the test the student just took but based on how he told me he answered the questions, I see a massive improvement in understanding and confidence from when we first started. I have no specific concerns and am happy to see the progress that is being made."
"We worked on her math review for study skills quiz. She got the hang of it as we went through it. We also prepared for her science test this week by going over possible essay questions and brainstorming how she would write an essay."
"We did some more with circles and geometry. In particular we worked on scaling objects up and down and how the dimension of the value changes when expanding. We then talked briefly about integers and how to add and subtract negatives."
"Today we started looking at Objective 2 for the exit level assessment test. We spent quite a bit of time practicing writing linear equations from a word problem. We will keep practicing this and solving linear equations at the beginning of each session."
