Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The first student and I worked together first and continued to work page by page in a mini-test format. He completed questions on his own without my help and then we went over any issues he had. I also made him explain the steps he used to get to the answer. It seems like he is improving for the most part. The second student and I worked together for the second half and I had her first complete a worksheet on solving two part equations. She was able to do some of them perfectly, but others were a struggle. We will continue to work on this, as well as other concepts in the practice tests. Their mother printed off practice exams that I sent over e-mail and they are going to work on these before next session. Also, I assigned them note cards to make as well as reviewing the reference sheet."
"The student had done a significant amount of work between lessons. We went over several chapters of History and did a quiz on what she had covered so far. She did well on the beginning and end of the quiz when we graded it. I instructed her to review what she had missed and then continue on to the homework I assigned."
"Today we covered periodic trends and why they are what they are, basic organic chemistry, and then we reviewed solubility rules and strong acids and bases. I noticed the student improved tremendously in her memorization of acids and bases and solubility rules. For practice, I just left her some reading on general and environmental chemistry that may show up on the test. No concerns."
"Did math problems from assessment, also study guide. The student is learning what the assessment entails."
"Overview of the test/how to test prep, covered physics formulae and units, went over content and presentation of the assessment. Next week we will practice the test for any specific areas."
"The student and I reviewed her latest practice assessment, paying special attention to the Math section. We also looked over the Reading and Science sections and did some extra Math practice together, on which the student showed great improvement."
"We covered reading and writing: chapters 5, 10, and part of chapter 6 in the SAT prep book. The student caught on quickly to the idea of reasoning through vocabulary questions ("Sentence Completion"; chapter 5) even when he didn't know the definitions of all the words. He did well on the writing questions ("Improving Sentences"; chapter 10), answering most correctly and with certainty. He was less confident about the "Passage-based Reading" questions (chapter 6); we'll continue to work on these in our next session. I've asked him to complete a full, timed practice exam (test #1 in the book) before our next session and to score it himself if possible."
"We went over how to tackle vocabulary problems as well as the major grammar concepts the SAT tests (verb tenses, subject verb agreement, "being", semicolons, etc.). We also went over some more math problems. For homework the student is to do another practice test and then write a personal example essay."
"The student and I covered a variety of subjects today: reading comprehension, sentence completion, math, and sentence improvement. She is strong in math and we will mostly focus on the writing and verbal sections. For homework, I am having her study vocabulary, look over a list of strategies I gave her, and work some sentence improvement/reading problems."
"The student and I had a math-centric day today, reviewing our work in averages and polynomials, and delving into inequalities, algebraic equations, and word problems. She is good at identifying exactly what confuses her on each problem, which makes it easier to focus on what stumps her: often the phrasing of the questions and remembering certain key facts/tools for equations (i.e. the distributive property). I assigned more math exercises for homework, as well as a writing prompt and some grammar work to keep those fresh as well."
"Today's session couldn't have gone better. We extensively covered math, English, reading and science, doing roughly 25-30 problems in each subject. For homework, I assigned two practice tests. I look forward to our next session on Thursday."
"Today the student and I focused on Math. I've noticed a lot of improvement from her, especially in Math. Problems that I used to have to explain step by step, she now understands just from a hint and can solve on her own. She's growing more confident and happy when she gets an answer right on her own. I'm very proud of how far she's come and confident that she will continue to improve."
