"Introduced science experiments section and reading prose section. Practiced English strategies and discussed rhetorical questions."
"Student did very well on her first practice ACT. Her composite score was a 25. She wanted to improve her English and science scores so we went over those sections together. For several of the science questions she understood her error and how to fix it. Some, however, were a little more difficult to comprehend. She wants to do a couple more practice tests on her own. I also suggested she do additional science practice sections so she can get used to them."
"It was great to meet the student. She seemed very highly motivated and very ready to learn how to do better on her ACT. We started out by going over a practice math section that she had completed ahead of time and sent to me. She only missed 11 problems, and in the process of going over them, we came up with various strategies to address her specific needs. She is currently taking calculus, so she's very skilled at math, but the format of the test sometimes causes some mistakes. For example, we decided that to address the highly symbolic and theoretical kinds of questions that the ACT math likes to throw in, she just needs to take a deep breath and spend an entire minute reading through the problem (instead of just skipping it outright). After we went over the math section, she asked me to refresh her knowledge of various science topics, in preparation for the science practice test she wanted to take before our next session. So I talked about ionic and covalent bonding, solutions, and other topics that seemed a little dusty in her memory. We also looked at some sample science ACT questions, analyzing what kinds of questions were likely to show up on the test. She should be much better prepared to take the science practice test before our next session!"
