Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Greenwood, IN Phonics tutoring
We covered matching single and plural nouns and verbs. I reviewed the student's plan for a four paragraph essay (minimum) due at our next meeting. The student was attentive. Strategies and study skills discussed included different styles of brainstorming. The student was left with grammar practice, as well as a subject for her next essay. The biggest win from this session was the student's improved focus.

In this session we began talking about the revision process. We've been focusing on organization in writing, and how the "process" helps with that. In previous sessions I've had Student 1 and Student 2 work on outlining before beginning to write. This time we talked about reverse outlining and how to use that as a tool to begin revisions. I had them reverse outline each other's essays, and then compare the reverse outline to the original outline they had made. We then looked closely at the paragraphs where the two outlines differed, and I had them rewrite those paragraphs to more clearly express their ideas. For next time, I've asked them to write an essay with a new prompt by first brainstorming, then outlining, and then writing the essay. This essay will help us transition away from persuasive essays and on to different types of argumentative essays.

Last week we started on cursive letters. The student liked it more than he expected. He learned enough letters to sign his name. There's still plenty of work to do, but I think he is going to do well.

We began the session discussing the student's mock stock market account. He was pleased that his account had gone up in value. We then discussed his ongoing Science lab involving the separation and identification of the components of a "sludge" mixture. He showed very good understanding of nature of mixtures. We spent the remainder of the session reviewing and modifying the student's written explanation of the solution to a Math problem involving the area of a hexagon and the volume of its corresponding hexagonal prism.
