GRE Subject Test in Literature in English Tutoring FAQ

If you are considering applying to graduate programs in an English field, you may need to complete the GRE Literature in English subject test, more commonly referred to as the Lit GRE. The GRE Literature in English exam covers American, British, and world literature, including drama, fiction, nonfiction, and plays. It spans from those written in Old and Middle English to works in modern English, as well as older translated pieces. In addition to identification questions that ask you to recall the title, author, or publication date of a literary work based on a passage or quote, the test also asks you to analyze passages and identify specific literary concepts. Other questions will test your knowledge of English grammar, while others still may address the history and ideas of literary theory. Some questions may require extremely specific reference knowledge, such as those that ask about the translation of passages given in Old and Middle English and those that demand knowledge of biblical and classical allusions. Each exam consists of roughly 230 questions, so there is plenty of room for each problem type to appear numerous times, as well as for the test to measure your knowledge of extremely diverse topics.

If this all sounds completely overwhelming to you, that is a perfectly normal response! Do not let this cause you unnecessary stress when your energy could be better spent studying. Work with an experienced instructor via one-on-one tutoring sessions designed to help you give your best performance on test day. Online GRE Subject Test in Literature in English Tutoring review by Stacy
First session with the student.  I familiarized myself with her English workbook, we reviewed several grammatical concepts (different types of pronouns, distinguishing adverbs and adjectives, the difference between parts of speech and parts of sentences), and made a plan for our next session.

We started out by talking about the practice test the student had taken and corrected since our last session. We talked about general test strategy, strings of wrong answers, and endurance in sitting through a timed test. The problems that involve multiple steps to get to an answer seemed to be the most difficult for her, but she seemed to both improve and gain some confidence by the end of the session. For the next week, I assigned the math section of a practice test untimed and done in parts over a few days, paying special attention to picking which problems she would choose to skip and go back for in an actual test situation.

We began by reviewing the word problems that she had from last time. Following this, we worked on triangles and circles, both of which chapters I assigned as homework. Since it will be a while before we meet again, I also assigned 2 computer-based tests and 4 essays.

The student and I went over last week's homework for the first half of this session. He did an awesome job with Quadrilaterals and Circles in the homework so we pushed ahead to Permutations, Combinations, and Counting problems. He was much improved on the Sentence Equivalence questions if the homework was any indication. Next week, we'll be tackling reading comprehension and trying to finish the Data Analysis section of the test. The student wants to take the GRE before classes really get into swing, so we're going to try to blast through the rest.

Online GRE Subject Test in Literature in English Tutoring review by Steven
The student and I had our first session of test tutoring. In this session we mainly focused on the math portion of the test. We went over several practice problems, to introduce the type of question one might see on the test. She did very well on the easy level-math questions, and reasonably well on the medium-level ones. She did struggle on the more difficult ones, but that's to be expected. She still has a strong base of math knowledge, it just needs to be tapped into. Finally we ended the session by going over types of verbal questions.

Online GRE Subject Test in Literature in English Tutoring review by Seema
We started by talking about the student's goals for the GRE and graduate school. I then went over some overall strategies for the GRE including what is tested, study tips, using scratch paper effectively, and how to approach the test (marking questions, guessing, etc.). We then discussed specific strategies and concepts for the math section: plugging in on quantitative comparison questions, plugging in on MC questions, "must be" questions, factoring out the greatest common factor for variable expressions (example x^2+x^3=x^2(x+1)), factoring for numeric expressions to simplify them, and exponent properties.
