How can a GRE tutor help you?

Many college graduates are surprised to learn they may need to take another standardized exam if they plan on applying to graduate school. The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, tests everything you learned in high school and college. It consists of analytical writing, verbal, and quantitative sections. These may include sub-sections that are unscored, but you won't know what they are when you are being tested. Add to that the three-hour, 45-minute length of the exam, and you will find that many facets of your intellect will be challenged. You may feel uncertain when preparing for the GRE. If so, you are not alone. Private instruction can help ease the burden. Personalized GRE instruction in Akron, OH, will allow you to develop a rapport with your tutor to facilitate the learning process.

You should start preparing well in advance. Varsity Tutors can help you find a professional GRE tutor in Akron to work towards adequate preparation on the day of the exam. The tutor will go over all of the subject material covered. By doing so, they can identify your strengths and weaknesses. Any areas of confusion will be addressed, and included in a customized study plan. For example, your tutor can target your essay-writing skills, or your proficiency in solving math problems, interpreting data, or using vocabulary.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

GRE Tutoring review by Gerard in Akron, OH
The student and I worked through some practice math problems today. We started by going through a practice set together; He answered almost every one correctly! He had only a few issues with the quantitative comparison questions, but was able to figure them out after I had mentioned that he made slight mistakes. We finished our session by going through some hard math problems. I stressed the importance of understanding prime factorization for many tougher problems and I believe he has a firm grasp on the concept now. For homework, he should attempt several timed sections as his GRE is coming up relatively soon, and he needs to make sure he is moving quickly enough through the math section.

We picked up today where we left off on Friday with the rest of the math diagnostic test. I encouraged the student to do practice on combinations and permutations and also to try some data interpretation problems. The GRE always has several multi-question data interpretation problems where the difficulty is not in the math (which is simple) but simply in reading the data and understanding what the question is asking, which means they should be points that she can comfortably expect to claim once she understands what the test wants. We then discussed PITA (plug-in-the-answer) and choosing numbers as strategies and practiced both techniques on sample problems.

Today I gave the student what may be the most important advice he'll ever get for success on the GRE: take it at a time of day that matches your peak time. He tells me he likes to meet in the morning because he's a morning person, yet he's scheduled to take the GRE at 5:30 pm. The beauty of the online GRE is that you can schedule to take the test morning, afternoon, or early evening. It can make a huge difference in scores. He is going to look into switching to morning testing time.

GRE Tutoring review by Rebecca in Akron, OH
The student and I had our last session before her taking the official GRE. We went over a few problems that she had questions about on a practice test that she did. One was about rates - specifically, combining rates when 2 people are working at different rates on the same problem. We also looked briefly at problems where you substitute in symbols for mathematical processes. We reviewed a few problems that involved manipulating variables in terms of other variables, and she excelled at those. We also went over some probability problems - specifically, when you would add independent probabilities vs multiply them, and when you would find the probability of the "opposite case" and subtract it from 100%. Before I left, we went over some basic strategies (process of elimination, skipping questions and coming back to them) that will be useful to her on the test.

This was my last session with the student before her test on Thursday (!!!), so we went over a few practice sets she did on her own as well as some basic math exercises on solving linear equations. She has progressed SO much since our first session, and I wish her the best of luck on her test.

GRE Tutoring review by Georgia in Akron, OH
This evening we went through the majority of the geometry diagnostic in the GRE math review. Some of the processes combined algebra with geometry to solve the problem. You are demonstrating a better understanding of formulas and equations along with how to use different processes to solve the problems. You have such a great attitude! The study strategy we have been using is working well for you and I am just encouraging you to keep up the good work! Try to complete the geometry section this week along with the discrete quantitative questions. We will look at sample tests during our next session.
