Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our first session I discussed the SSAT format: the sections, time allowed for each, number of questions, etc. After discussing the SSAT, I went over some test-taking tips. We concluded the session by completing practice problems pertaining to each of the sections: Quantitative, Verbal, Reading, and Writing. The practice problems allowed me to see what I should focus on with each section."
"Today we warmed up with a vocabulary practice. Since the first session. the student has been using word clusters to create words. Today we did two creative activities that allowed her to use her word knowledge a 5 senses simile poem and a diamante poem, focusing on using the word along with adjectives, nouns, verbs and antonyms. Reviewing her work with distributive and order of operations she seems more comfortable with the concepts (math concepts she had not yet learned as a 5th grader and will be learning this year in 6th grade). I then had her complete the math diagnostic from practice test one in her placement exam practice book and the scores will be used to help us moving forward with areas of need for her math instruction. She seems to have a good grasp on the reading section of the diagnostic and will need to continue practicing the verbal section. Moving forward continuing to build her vocabulary and practicing with analogies will be extremely important for her success on the exam."
"We continued studying vocabulary with an emphasis on analyzing words based on prefix, suffix, and root. The student is very quickly learning to make connections between groups of words from the same base. We also worked through learning all the basic types of verbal analogies. He was able to come up with his own examples to demonstrate each type and he did very well on the short practice test I gave him. He got more than 2/3 of the answers correct, and when we went over the ones we missed, most of the incorrect answers were based on very logical mistakes; there was very little wild guessing involved. I assigned him a little bit of homework in his study guides, and asked him to use the web site I sent him to practice on his fraction and mixed numeral subtraction. When we're back together again, we are going to start addressing word problems and any deficiencies he might have in basic geometry."
