Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"He has a test coming up in Geometry, so we worked through his study guide. He specifically needs to practice the midpoint and distance formulas. We discussed problem solving and always making sure to make sure that he is answering the right question, because he has the tendency to set up a problem correctly and solve for a variable but not necessarily answer the question. His mother had printed out details of his grades for each course, and we looked at the various missing assignments and made a plan to catch up what missing work he could, with the assignments worth the most points being a priority."
"I assisted the student with his college algebra homework. I demonstrated how to solve the kinds of problems he was working on, namely, factoring polynomials to find the zeroes of functions. When we were done, he had a much better understanding of how to do these problems."
"I checked over the homework problems that the student completed prior to my arrival, and then we discussed the rest of the assigned problems. He completed the homework and stated that his last exam score was an improvement to before he starting tutoring sessions. He also stated that he completed a quiz recently and felt very confident about the material, and it should be reflected in his grade."
"I covered different properties in geometry. The student seems to have difficulty applying the theory to the homework questions. I explained how to apply the theory to solve homework problems. The student had good attitude and paid attention during session. I introduced study skills and the approach to solve problems. He will let me know of his test score."
"I helped the student go through all the concepts that are going to be tested on her Thursday quiz. She is really smart and positive. I found her struggling with some of the basic concepts, which can be conquered gradually in time. Also, I would like to help her with her arithmetic skills, since calculating by oneself could help building up a so-called mathematical intuition."
"I reviewed Tuesday's class material with the student. I assessed her understanding of the material based on her explanation of it and her class notes. She completed practice 1.4 with significant effort on solving adjacent, complementary, and supplementary angles. She has a visual grasp on the topic (able to observe graphs and come to a reasonable conclusion), and tries to use a step-by-step approach to solve a problem. Now she needs to learn to collect facts in geometric terms, and use them to solve a problem. Her other challenge is the ability to do intermediate level algebra (multiplication/ division of intermediate and large numbers). This is not a geometry issue, but I think a frequent review and practice in this area will help her speed through her problem solving. I recommend she at least study the multiplication tables daily until she has mastered them."
