During today's session the student continued reading a more difficult book. It was great to see her sound out the more difficult, four syllable words, i.e.: redecorate. When presented with such words she enthusiastically attempted to find the smaller words and sounded out the words by using her vowel sounds. She no longer reads in a soft voice that was indicative of her previous low reading confidence. Now she reads loudly and eagerly to show her progress. Her reading maturity shows through when she proactively requests to practice syllables that she's challenged with. At this juncture, presenting her with more difficult reading passages is important to keep her engaged and progressing. During our next session, we'll attempt some higher level reading exercises.

In my last session with the student, I re-tested her on the same material I tested her on at our first session, so I could determine how much improvement she made. On the first test, she scored "instructional level" with 2nd grade sight words. On 2nd grade level reading, she missed 7 words and read 28 words per minute. On the second test, she scored "independent" on her 2nd grade sight words. For her 2nd grade level reading test, she missed 3 words and read 54 words per minute. She shows a slight improvement in her reading skills. For the remainder of the session, we took turns reading from the "Beauty and the Beast" book.

We went over vowel team sounds with flashcards and practiced them during reading. We also re-visited older fluency passages, which he completed the 121 word passage in 1 min. This is an extreme improvement. We started reading, just one page of the third grade book, which has very few pictures. This is the book we will read a little bit from each session.

The student was given vocabulary words. Then he read a text on how to make pizza. The ingredients were out of order, and he had to place the ingredients in correct order. Next he read three short letters and he had to determine who wrote the letters- he did great!! The student has a worksheet he needs to finish on Fact or Opinion for next session.

Today we continued our work on non-fiction. We began by finishing the student's book report on working dogs. I was very pleased to see that he drew his picture! We discussed how to define words and the difference between making connections with the book and pulling real facts from the book. We then read another non-fiction book about the desert to work on comprehension. I would read a page and ask specific questions about that page. We then explored non-fiction text features. We ended by the student reading his book from school to work on his reading fluency.

During this session, we continued our unit on the five-paragraph persuasive essay. We covered the mechanics of the body paragraph, as well as different kinds of transitional sentences. I presented the student with some essay prompts, and he created detailed outlines for them. He is doing an excellent job and growing as a writer. Next week we will begin writing an essay.
