Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I first reviewed dates, numbers, and other previous vocab. Today's new Pinyin were: g, k, h, j, q, x. Today's new vocab were: very, I/me/my, you, today, is, and no. Today's new phrase was: "Today I'm early." Also, we learned how to write three new characters: "person", "mouth", and "how many." We covered a lot in this session, and we'll practice more to nail them down. The student's homework is to finish the worksheet."
"I helped him get ready for his quiz tomorrow. Our session included reviewing the lessons from class and writing the characters from those lessons. I showed him the order of writing the strokes, and he followed along on his paper as I showed him how to write each character."
"We continued our review for chapters 4-6. I created Chinese character tracing worksheets for the group, with outlined hollow fonts so they can trace it. First, we reviewed the Chinese roots/radicals for chapters 4-6. They mainly didn't have trouble with it, except for chapter 6 roots, which had a lot of new vocabulary anyway. We didn't do the tracing worksheets for chapter 4 last time, so we started with that as well. I also incorporated the story and origin of some of the characters, so that they could understand how the longer characters works by telling a story. After reviewing the vocabulary from tracing, I had them try to read the passage from chapter 4 and see how much they improved. Student 1 and Student 2 did really well, and Student 3 needed some help initially, but did pretty well thereafter. We repeated the pattern for chapters 5 and 6 - which was doing the worksheets first and then teaching them tricks and stories about some of the individual characters and then had them try to read and translate the passages. We also reviewed numbers by having them count from 1-10, then count by tens from 10-90, and then count by hundreds from 100-900. Finally, we did sentence structures for each chapter and I practice. They really studied this time, so they had no trouble with the sentence structures for the most part. We ended the session by having them do an improvised and simple self-introduction when they first meet someone. This is for bonus points up to 10 points for the test next session."
