Tutoring review by Sam in Woonsocket, RI
The student completed his weekly packet of practice problems. I was happy to find that he had begun the packet and gotten every problem correct. Next we worked on problems from his geometry book to prepare for his final. He demonstrated that he could properly identify when to use the slope formula and use it correctly. He did the same with the distance formula. I was happy to see he could do this without help. He also has a strong understanding of two-dimensional shapes, which is very important. We will be reviewing for his final for our remaining sessions.

We reviewed place value, and the student did great. He might have just been rusty from the summer. He is very well along into mastering concepts required for 5th grade, and we will continue to enhance and refine for deeper understanding. Our primary focus now is organization of his thoughts combined with showing his work and justifying his steps and thought process. He did alright today but we will continue practice in order to build good math habits.

I was excited to see that the student got a 94% on her last Algebra test. We went over what she missed, just to be thorough, and we realized that it was just a vocabulary issue (zeros of a function refer to the value when x=0). Then, we worked on inequalities. She understood most of the concepts, but we worked on how best to plug in values to make sure the inequality is correct. We had a little extra time left, so we looked over one of her old tests, the one that she got the lowest grade on. After having worked on linear functions last week and inequalities this week, she attempted some questions from that test on linear equations. The little tricks she learned to help her check her work helped a lot.
