Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Tom in Framingham, MA
I'm trying to have the student work on specifics vis a vis his analysis of Catch-22. The trick is to get big concepts covered, while retaining the facts from the book. The book has a viewpoint, and history is history, and the combination of the two is creating some interesting conundrums, such as "war is necessary because the Nazis were bad" = "Yossarian should just fly his missions, because they're for the greater good."

Spanish homework and content vocabulary.  We are working on context clues in the provided text that help us figure out what answer the homework is asking for.  We are looking at the article: if its singular, plural, masculine or feminine.  We are also looking at the number of letters in the word and the part of speech.

The student practiced math problems that included fractions, proportions, simplification of fractions, etc. He also played the "in and out" game, which involved evaluating a set of numbers and deciding the factor difference between the numbers (the difference between 20 and 10 and 10 and 5 is that the first number is twice as big as the second). He completed a set of equivalence problems converting from rods to miles and from inches to feet.

In order to prepare for the free-response portion of the student's trimester exam, we completed some further free-response practice over all four units so far, covering everything from the basics of central tendency to linear regression to experimental design. The only problems which posed any difficulty at this point were the open-ended ones, because he had trouble narrowing down the best of the answers we devised. I assured him that any of the correct answers will be acceptable on those questions. Next time we will prepare for the multiple-choice portion.

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Brittany in Framingham, MA
Today was a successful session with the student.  We went over the remainder of her first practice test, in addition to the essay I assigned her for homework.  I sent her sample graded SAT essays and some resources with rubrics/tips.  She wrote a great essay! I sense that she is already a good writer (she is in AP US History and AP English), and in addition to that, she utilized the resources I gave her very well.  She used three very strong examples by drawing from her English and history classes and her organizational scheme was strong, too.  We also walked through a math section together.  Working through math problems with her helped me see that the main thing she struggles with is just seeing how to begin some of the more logic-based problems.  Overall, her algebra skills are very strong.  Just to reinforce some of the math topics we covered, I emailed her a few resources to look over that make up a good comprehensive review.

I assigned the student some problems from the end of chapter 4. They were mixed. Some asked him to find the equation of a line parallel to a another line going through two points. There were some that asked him to write the equation of a perpendicular line. I corrected the problems that he did (when needed) and guided him through the ones he was stuck on. We concluded Chapter 4.
