Session Summaries by Spanish Tutors

Goodyear, AZ Spanish tutoring
We started of by doing an arts and crafts project using the colors red, blue, green and yellow. They had to roll up tissue paper and glue them on a stick person. Student A knew more of the colors than Student B, but at the end of our session, they were doing it very well. We also played Simon Says using the prepositions up and down. They seemed to have picked up arriba and abajo quickly. We then learned a song, which had to do with counting up to six. They got that very well. I then told them a story of two princesses. I wasn't expecting them to understand most of it, but when I said words that we worked on that day, they could pick them out, which was really good.

After a long break, the student and I resumed sessions this morning. He seems to be improving in his Spanish class, but he still has difficulty remembering things that we've been over. I briefly introduced him to the imperfect tense because he is about to start that at school. We used the rest of our time to review the preterite tense, its uses, and almost all verb conjugations. Some of these, such as car gar zar verbs, the student remembered well, others not as much. I gave the student a review of many kinds of verbs and instructed him to use these notes to slowly study and cement these conjugations in.

We covered vocabulary and grammar (preterite versus imperfect). The student did a very good job with these topics. We reviewed vocabulary, did sentence translations, verb conjugations, and finally, played a drawing game to reinforce vocabulary. The student has a test coming up on March 4th that we are preparing her for.

The student and I went over on how to tell time in Spanish. We also review the nouns and some of the helping verbs. The student was struggling with the differentiation between "son" and "es a la". He was ok with the material we were reviewing. I included some practicing sentences that helps the student to tell the time. I did not leave the student with extra practice material because he has his own homework. I noted progress at the end of the session because the student was able to answer the questions in complete sentences.

The student and I went through homework from the chapter on clothing, colors, and "de compras." It included an audio clip for listening comprehension in which a character discusses shopping for clothing. Our strategy for this was listening to the clip in pieces so that he did not get overwhelmed with the information and the pace of the speaking. I think he did very well with this strategy - he understood everything in these short clip pieces and answered the questions correctly. While we did a conversation together last time, today I read aloud a page that I wrote in Spanish, and he listened along and repeated what I said in English. His comprehension is not as bad as he thinks it is - it is normal to find it difficult and to need speaking to be slow. He thinks this was a helpful exercise that we will practice in the future.
