Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Goodyear, AZ Microbiology tutoring
With his online course complete, the student and I focused on reviewing for final exams. We reviewed exponential models, a concept he has had consistent trouble with, then moved to chemistry. He was improving by the end of the session. I plan to cover topics quickly, then after a couple of sessions return, refreshing the student's memory and making him develop additional problem solving skills. I believe that frequent exposure--rather than infrequent, in-depth coverage--is the best way to review material that has been covered in the classroom.

Today, we did a pretty wide-ranging review covering all of the things that the student felt like he needed help on. Topics covered included periodic table trends, mol-mol, mol-mass, and mass-mass conversions, nuclear chemistry, and others. He has really come a long way this year and should be able to do great on his final.

We discussed the following: (a) type of organic reactions, (b) radioactivity, and (c) thermodynamics. After this, the tutor started asking the student to answer several problems from various parts of the course to see the potential weak points. Based on this, we decided that we will do problems of bonding, stoichiometry, and chemical equilibrium in the next class.

The student and I covered more acid and base chemistry. We worked on hydronium ion concentrations and how they relate to pH and pOH. We also covered electrolytes and their relationship to acid strength. We also went over how to convert from molarity to normality. Overall, a great session.

Today the student and I reviewed for two quizzes. One is in geometry regarding the area and circumference of circles. I went through two sections of the chapter with her and helped her take comprehensive notes for her open notebook quiz. I tried to do problems in each topic that had different given information in order for her to be comfortable with each kind of problem that could potentially be on the quiz. For chemistry, we went over a few of each type of problems involving Gay-Lussac's Law, Charles' Law, and Boyle's Law. She was very good at plugging out these problems, but I advised her to try a few more (test herself) to make sure she knew when to use each law.

We had chemistry review prior to a final test where we covered the concepts of heat and temperature, specific heats, enthalpy and delta H of a reaction, endothermic vs exothermic reactions, and (just to keep things interesting) a titration problem thrown in for good measure. The difficult part was the titration problem was thrown into the mix without any "warning", i.e. foundation of simpler problems leading to this one. There was a multiple step problem of converting mL to L, Molarity to mol/L, and a change in volume. In the meantime, he also had to take into account the molar ratio of the reactants. Next time we meet, the student will let me know how it goes. He also has his project due on the same day as taking this test, so his teacher has really piled on the work. We've kept on top of it though, so the student should do well.
