In our session today, the student and I covered acid-base chemistry. We started by discussing the properties of acid and bases as well as the values of ka and kb (equilibrium constants). We discussed the different definitions of acids and bases (Arrhenius, Lewis, Bronsted-Lowry). We also talked about the pH scale and pOH scale. He seemed to understand all of this pretty well, although he needed clarification on the concept of conjugate acids and bases. I explained why the conjugate base of a strong acid was weak and vice versa. After explaining it in a couple of different ways, he understood. We then talked about finding the pH of a strong acid or base and compared it with the more complicated process of finding the pH for a weak acid or base. We practiced many problems like that to make sure that it was clear for him. We also talked about using the approximation that the amount of the weak acid that dissociates is so small compared to the original amount that you can neglect it and avoid the quadratic equation. We ended the session by talking about polyprotic acids. I explained that for most polyprotic acids, you only need to pay attention to the first dissociation of a proton and the first ka, but sulfuric acid is the exception. We practiced a few problems like that to make sure the student understood. I think overall, he is understanding acid/base chemistry really well!

Today we worked on the student's biology exam final review sheet. We completed chapter 1: scientific method, chapters 8 and 9: photosynthesis and cellular respiration, chapter 10: mitosis and meiosis, chapters 11 and 14 genetics, and we were on question #5 in the chapters 12 and 13: DNA and RNA processes section. She generally was able to remember the ideas or the structures of the main terms, but needed help connecting the terminology (for example: double helix) to the idea (two swirls). She needs to review all the major processes we covered today: photosynthesis, cellular respiration, mitosis, meiosis, and DNA replication. For the next week, I will email her and her mom with videos that will help her understand these processes.
