Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

First, we corrected homework; the student did extremely well. He missed only a very few of the questions and he quickly recognized why the correct answers were correct. Next, we went over two editing exercises. He read the passages and made checks where he thought there was an error. Then he described what each error was and what the correction would be. That went well overall. He caught most errors and was able to formulate revisions to sentences which were not fluently stated. He has a good underlying understanding of grammar points and a strong sense of how to achieve an easy, accurate flow to writing. Afterward, we moved on to more prep book exercises. I had him focus on the Reading Section Prose and Humanities passages. These tend to be the most challenging, even for bright students like him; they require interpretation and inference that call on more abstract thinking vs. the more concrete critical thinking employed in the sciences. Again, he did well. I assigned homework. We agreed to meet next weekend, 4/4 and 4/6.

Today the student and I finished practice test five (reading and science). We started the session by talking about her college visits and what she liked and didn't like. I asked her what she was most worried about with regards to the upcoming ACT test and she told me timing, especially in the English section. I told her to not worry about the time so much and to really just try to answer as many questions as she can 100% correctly and if she doesn't finish the section that is okay. She seemed okay with this answer but was still a little worried. She finished with an overall reading score of 31. We discussed skipping around when it comes to the science section. She is to complete any passage she feels is an easy read or easy topic and skip the harder "looking" one's until later in the test. I also told her not to read every word and not to spend too much time on one question, skip it and go back even if it is at the end of the test. She finished the science part of practice test five. She took a little longer than allowed but when the real test comes I feel that the stress and pressure that she will have during the test will get her moving at a fast rate and speed. Her overall science score was a 30 and her overall composite score was a 30. Next week we are going to go over all the different strategies and questions that we have come up with and have about each section.
