Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we completed the science project we worked on during the last session. We worked on calculating the mean, median, and mode of the weather. We had to acquire the precipitation, pressure, humid, and the low and high temperatures over the span of two weeks. With this information, we performed all the pertinent statistical analysis as well as created graphs to display the data."
"The student and I spent the first hour of our lesson going over chemistry problems. She is working on reactions and ionization of acid and base mixtures. We started by doing some problems related to concentration of H and OH ions, as well as determining the pH and pOH of molecules. After that we did some work on naming acids and balancing equations for acid-base mixtures. We spent the last 30 minutes on math. I gave her a review of the formula for graphing circles. She knew everything except for how to complete the square to put the equation in standard form, so I showed her how to do this and wrote some problems for her to practice. She can now do this skill confidently. Finally I gave her a preview of ellipses, which she is going to study next. I showed her how to find the major axis, minor axis, foci, and how to graph them. She was able to do all these things with a little practice, and between the two shapes should be able to solve problems in whichever form she is given them."
"Today we went on to complete the last past of the first IB practice test that we started. I was happy to see that the student had attempted all of the problems prior to our meetings and it helped our session tremendously. We then went on to a paper from the same test. We will continue working on it during our next sessions. The student did great!"
"Today we solved a number of problems, from previous quizzes involving acid base equilibrium, colligative properties (freezing point depression, vapor pressure lowering, osmotic pressure), chemical equilibrium (equilibrium constant), heat, activation energy, and rate constant. The student was engaged and did not struggle with the content."
"This was my first session with the student. We went over wave concepts to help him review for his quiz tomorrow. At first I was a bit worried because he was a bit shaky on the concepts and applying the equations to solve problems. However, as the session went on, he seemed to pick up the flow of how to approach and solve these problems and seems more confident. We went over echoes, the Doppler effect, the general wave equation, and the relationship between properties of waves (frequency to period, period to wavelength, wavelength to frequency, what determines pitch and loudness)."
"Today, I talked with the student a little more about chemical reactions, and we went over a review test before her exam on Monday. In these questions, I talked with her about synthesis reactions involving alkynes and organometallics. We also discussed a bit about the synthesis of alcohols from epoxide ring openings, as well as from nucleophilic addition of organometallics to aldehydes and carboxylic acids."
