Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I mostly worked on math today. Her mother had printed up a bunch of worksheets and marked some pages in some of the student's workbooks, so we had plenty to work on. She did a great job focusing."
"During this session, the student and I primarily focused on the importance of crafting powerful, concise topic sentences for the body paragraphs in his History essay. Instead of having him complete the topic sentence exercise worksheet on his own, we spent the majority of the session discussing the worksheet together. He is still more so in the outline stages of the writing process. We looked at his outline and narrowed his argument's focus by deleting unnecessary information and adding information where his supporting details were a bit sparse. He did a great job with the topic sentence exercise and demonstrated that he understands the importance of topic sentences. I had him read several sample paragraphs and identify the topic sentences, the supporting details, and sentences which felt off topic or out of place. I then gave him sample paragraphs that were missing topic sentences and had him create topic sentences for each paragraph. He found this part of the exercise to be a bit more challenging, but he was able to create effective, succinct topic sentences for each paragraph after a couple of tries. For our next session, I requested that he come prepared with a complete rough draft of his essay."
"Final touches on the Gatsby paper, due tomorrow. Worked on the intro, topic sentences, word choice, and general tweaking."
"Today we covered biogenetic law, psychosexual development, and translating difficult concepts into writing. The student was very open-minded and receptive to constructive criticism. We got to a point where he could easily finish his assignment."
"Today we covered the concepts of the six writing traits: content and ideas, organization, details, voice, sentence structure, and conventions. The student needed help with the detail portion of her story. She was very receptive to the material reviewed. I included the strategy of revising and editing. She was able to see the progression of her essay."
"Today we edited the student's chapter summary for Tuck Everlasting, focusing on synthesizing and condensing details down to a unifying thought/ sentence. She also completed her map lab on political vs. physical maps, and we briefly went over the key elements of the scientific method for a quiz she has tomorrow."
