Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session went well today. We had time to cover a lot of material and even review some old concepts. We mostly covered order of operations, use of parentheses, areas, fractions, and word problems involving algebraic expressions."
"The student and I reviewed for the assessment again. She did the online practice test again, and she showed great improvement!"
"Today's session a bit more productive than last week's sessions. The student started off strong in terms of focus and was able to complete the mental math column from Wednesday. We continued with last Friday's assignments and she was able to complete her sentences for her vocabulary words ("up", "do", "she", "how"), writing practice using the workbook (V, X, and W), and her math assignments in her workbook and textbooks."
"Today we focused on money. First we played Monopoly which helped the student review her negative numbers then we focused on giving change. It was easy for the student to do the subtraction problems on a piece of paper. Next week we are going to practice with actual money so that she can see it."
"Student One: We covered adding fractions and also practiced logic and brain exercises using Sudoku.
Student Two: We did one round of Sudoku. Following that I taught her how to find percents of numbers, percentages, and discounts using percents. She learned fairly quickly and we will continue to practice in our next session."
"We worked on systems of equations, graphing inequalities, and word problems. The student is very bright. We went over a quiz he just got back. We talked about the importance of checking your work. I want to look up more practice graphing problems for the next time we meet."
"The student needed help with some worksheets in preparation for a test the next day. During our session, we worked on the problems and went over strategies for approaching these types of problems. We talked about how to set up an optimization problem by identifying the unknowns and modeling the problem. She said the session was very helpful and we talked about ways to maximize the effectiveness of the sessions by sending me worksheets or book problems that she is given in class so I can best prepare for the next tutoring session."
"I met with the student to review material for an upcoming test. We went over determining properties of polynomial functions such as local min/max, inflection points and concavity. We also reviewed previous material covering properties of functions involving absolute values."
"For this first session, I got to know the student and his learning style. We worked on a multiplication problem set and we saw how many problems he could complete in 1 minute. These are supposed to be memorized and he did a great job with them. We also worked on a holiday centimeter grid where I called out columns and rows and he had to find it on the grid to color it in. We practiced spatial reasoning and multiplication/area by having him find areas on the grid that he could color based on their height and width/area."
"We worked problems for her final. Material included exponents, prime factorization, solving equations, a few inequalities, and some word problems. She expressed confidence in her understanding of the material."
"The student and I worked on his Algebra 2 homework in preparation for his weekly exam tomorrow. This entailed proportions (with application of the ideal gas law), algebraic manipulation to isolate a variable, and completing the square. We are going to meet later this evening to finish the assignment and also work on a physics assignment."
"We reviewed linear equations and graphs, the student took the quiz and got 100. We went on to linear equality and reviewed the inequality signs and applied them to what graph or an inequality looks like. He did well on this and got 100% on his inequality quiz."
