Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Discussed the exam he took. We are both confident that he did well. Discussed an introduction to stoichiometry problems, mass/gram equivalent, and product theoretical yield and percentage yield. Did many, many practice problems. He seems to have the theory down well."
"I helped the student prepare for her chemistry exam over redox equations. We worked through how to balance the equations using half reactions. The different terminology associated with reductants and oxidants. And a little bit on voltaic cell batteries. She seems to be coming along well in this subject now."
"We covered some organic chemistry naming alkanes and alkenes, skeletal structure of alkanes and alkenes, branch structures and naming them. Functional groups like alkyl groups, halogen groups, alcohols and carboxylic acids. We also covered naming them according to the system. The student didn't struggle to learn and got the concept quickly. I left her with work to revise what we did and to practice drawing alkanes and alkenes and naming them including isomers that could be drawn from them also. No concerns from this session."
"The student and I covered her lab report regarding heat. It involved an experiment, in which a heated metal plate was put into water. We went over the heat equation, specific heat, heat exchange, and different aspects of conducting experiments. She seemed to understand this material pretty well."
"Today the student and I met to go over her quiz covering balancing equations. She still is struggling with this concept. We also went over the new section, covering total and net ionic equations. She was much better at balancing these problems but struggled with knowing the correct charges. Our plan for next week is to review this and give her additional problems to review these concepts. I will also drill her over ionic charges."
"I am so happy that the student got an A on her last test. Clearly, her summary notes are working. Today, we covered the cell cycle, specifically the phases of mitosis. We also went over the structure of DNA and did a quick overview of replication, transcription, and translation. Next session, we will cover these topics more in depth and do a quick review of the cell cycle."
