Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was the first session with the student in Algebra 2. She had a review sheet for her exam coming up. The material covered exponential growth, logarithms, and inverse functions. The student did very well once she tried to solve the problems. Hopefully, she realized that she knew the material better than she thought she did. She had trouble verbalizing/naming some of the concepts, but did great once she knew what to apply to each question."
"The student and I covered some science and vocabulary. Actually, the science consisted of vocabulary so the whole session was vocabulary-oriented. At any rate, the best strategy for this, I have found, is to quiz the student a few times. Then, isolate the "problem words" they consistently miss. When you tell them they only need to study the problem words, they like this, since it basically amounts to less studying. Gradually, this list of problem words shrinks into oblivion."
"The student told me that she felt strongest on the Math section, and needed the most help with linguistics, so we began by reviewing the grammar rules and mechanics covered by the English section, followed by an informal prep. Extrapolation from average yielded a score of 30. Made plans to cover reading the following day."
"The student and I kept working on graphing trigonometric functions in the Cartesian plane today. We specifically worked on tangent and cotangent and their transformations. She said her quiz on sine and cosine went well, so that's great news!"
"The student and I covered more science passages, as she was still struggling a bit with them. After working through a few together, I had her do some on her own and she did well. We also covered essay basics and some math."
"The student needed help in understanding the materials and how they apply in his line of work (managing a nursing home). He is always very attentive and engaging. I followed the same approach as in our previous session, which he found very useful, of providing him with an organized summary of the materials to assist him. He stated that he is doing very well with the grades."
