Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, the students had brought their school's homework on addition using estimation. They were having trouble understanding the concept, and I taught them using mental math to solve the problems on estimation. After working and practicing on those problems, they both were very confident on grasping the concept. Also they were asked to work on word problems using various mathematical operations. They both were given homework on long division and word problems."
"We began the session by reviewing the student's previous topic of completing equations by substituting. She has a good grasp on them, except for 3rd level ones which we reviewed more at the end of the session. We began and completed the topic of completing equations by elimination. At the end of the session, I came to the realization that she has great difficulty when doing any process with opposite signs (+ or -). When adding or subtracting opposite signs, she is always making these answers negative and adding the number. After the use of a number line and several more examples, she gained a stronger understanding of the concept. Since she has done it this way for so long, she will need a great deal of review and reinforcement on this to be successful with it."
"The student and I continued to prepare for his examination, which takes place today and tomorrow. He showed much better understanding of the algebra and geometry concepts we focused on in comparison to our last meeting. He and I were able to get through 3 separate practice exams in the 1.5 hour period with comparatively less interruption for questions. Although his understanding of the algebra concepts were more improved than his geometry knowledge, I believe his willingness and motivation to get through the practice exams continues to illustrate his approaching mastery of the subjects covered."
"The student and I met for the first review session before her final on Friday. We went over the review packet her professor gave her from start to finish. I guided her through the problems to help her remember how to do them and then gave her a detailed step-by-step approach to solving each problem. For questions she had more trouble with, I created similar problems for her to work on the practice the concepts and steps. The review covered all topics she has learned this quarter: graphing functions, declaring domain and range, finding derivatives and tangent lines, determining function behavior using first and second derivatives, and integration."
"To prepare for the student's final, he and I met for a final time to go over all of the topics that would be on his cumulative final. We reviewed many examples from his teachers review sheet and some other expanded ideas as well."
"The student and I reviewed for his calculus final today. He seemed confident in most of the semester's topics, so the main area of focus was on the second derivative, as well as inflection and concavity. He took good notes during our session, and he seemed to understand my explanations."
