Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session with the student was a review of trigonometric identities. She knows some basic ideas about trigonometric identities. She's confused on how to apply them to solve problems. I explained her how to insert these identities to simplify trigonometric functions. She was a little bit confused, but I explained it to her over and over until she finally understood the way these identities should be used. She solved some exercises all by herself and did them very well."
"Tonight we went through the student's practice exam for her final tomorrow. We covered most of the topics since the beginning of the semester until now. On some of the older material, we spent more time reviewing the formulas and strategies since it had been so long since we'd worked with them. I think the student has come a long way in the semester and seems to have much more confidence in herself. We will plan to meet again after the new year once her classes start up again."
"Tonight we worked on identifying the graphs of rational functions, working with rational functions when not presented as one polynomial over another, and synthetic division. The student continues to do very well, and the struggles with this class seem to be due solely to the format (Matlab). Because the work is either right or wrong, there is very little opportunity for her to get feedback on her problems. All of her errors so far have been very minimal, so she is grasping the concepts; she just needs some positive reinforcement and encouragement in this undertaking. She has already noted improvement upon re-doing her assignments."
"Tonight, I helped the student review for tomorrow's pre-calculus test. First, I helped her review an extra credit worksheet that went over several topics that will be on her test. Some of the problems on the worksheet included graphing trigonometric functions, implementing trigonometric identities, and right triangle trigonometry. After finishing the worksheet, we continued practicing the implementation of trigonometric identities and manipulating trigonometric functions. After today's review session, she felt confident for tomorrow's test."
"Tonight, the student and I reviewed for his final exam all night long. We went through every single question his teacher assigned to assure that the student had the best chance of scoring well on his exam. We reviewed linear equations, domain and range, maximums and minimums, piecewise functions, products and quotients of functions, standard and general quadratic functions, polynomial functions, factoring, long division to simplify polynomials, complex numbers, vertical and horizontal asymptotes, exponential and logarithmic functions, and half life problems. I feel that he will do well if he gets rest and shows his work!"
"Tonight, the student and I worked on a variety of problems about exponential functions. We discussed graphing them, using them to solve word problems, and finding exponential functions that go through pairs of points. She knew quite well how to do some of these problems before we began tonight, but was she less clear on others. We were quite productive and got through the majority of the exercises from the two sections of the book that she needed to review pretty quickly. We covered at least one exercise on each topic. I believe that she is in pretty good shape on this material. She is always very focused and a joy to have as a student. We have another session scheduled for Wednesday evening, and I will look forward to talking with her then."
