The focus for this session was reading comprehension and decoding. The student had trouble with previewing the text using important vocabulary, but was able to make predictions and retell what he read. He struggled with determining the most important part or event in the story, but this is something we will continue to work on. I noticed that he attempted to independently decode unknown words, but often skipped or included substitutions for some of the sight words he came across as he read. We will continue to work on these concepts during our next session. I left some books for him to practice with until then.

Our guided reading lesson focused on syllables and comprehension. The student is writing thoughtful responses, and he is trying to spell words on his own instead of just copying the word from the text as he was doing previously. I helped him use text to check his spelling after he writes the word. He is showing interest in locating compound words and counting syllables in words. We played four short games of Boggle to help him spell and write one syllable words. He enjoyed the game, though it is very challenging for him. He enjoys a challenge, and is motivated to improve and achieve to overcome the challenge. He asked for more word ladder exercises and to play more Boggle! He is starting to take the same zealous approach towards reading, which will aid him in improving his reading ability.
