"We went through half of a math section test and the answers. This took a lot longer than I had anticipated. He struggled a lot with applying information he knew to the word problems. It was hard for him to start to piece information together, making it hard for him to even start an algebra or geometry problem. I told him to keep working on a practice math section from his book to get more comfortable in his thinking and method."
"On Tuesday, we went through a little bit of each section of the ACT to try to evaluate where she is at overall. She did well. She has definitely improved on the English section, and her speed is plenty good enough, as long as she can maintain that speed over an entire English section. Math could still use the most work, but she continues to improve in recognizing how to attack the problems. Reading was mostly good, except her speed was off just a bit (by about 20 seconds per passage). This is not a difficult gap to fix, but it will be important so that she will be able to fully read each passage. She was a little indecisive on certain problems, and I think reducing time spent pondering between two answers could solve the speed issue. As for science, she has probably made the most improvement overall out of all the sections, as her ability to manage time and interpret graphs have done wonders. I left the student with the recommendation to take full section practice tests before our next rendezvous on Saturday. Her midterms will be over on Wednesday, so I asked that she find some time to do full length sections. With the ACT about two and a half weeks away, I feel good about where she is at."
"The student and I began with some grammar review before we got back into reading skills. We talked more about the types of questions one encounters on the reading exam and employed different strategies to approach each one. This was followed by several practice sections and review of his answers."
