Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Very productive meeting today covering chapters 3 and 4 of the book. The student had correctly completed much of the weekend practice without much trouble; after going over corrections from the assigned work we focused on diagramming and translating model sentences (Latin-English and English-Latin). I gave him several sentences to translate for our next meeting."
"We worked on translating sentences and reviewing the forms of sum and esse, in addition to all subjunctive forms in general. The student needs to continue reviewing vocabulary and should review the files I sent him (relative pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and basic verbs)."
"Prior to meeting with the student, I checked his online course to make sure we understood his assignment. The assignment was to write a speech in Ciceronian form but in English. He is confident he can handle it on his own and will follow his rubric and notes on the general outline that Cicero used in his speeches. He then had a translation that he wanted help with, so we went over that and as we translated, I pointed out more examples of devices that Cicero used."
"This session, the student and I reviewed all types of the subjunctive (present, imperfect, perfect, pluperfect) in both active and passive forms. Strong focus was placed on the perfect and pluperfect passive forms as these are especially difficult. We then reviewed several usages of the subjunctive: jussive, result, purpose and indirect questions. We discussed the difference between result and purpose clauses (both in identification and translation). Finally, we went through examples with each of these forms, identifying and translating the newly reviewed subjunctive forms and types in each sentence. The student improved greatly throughout our review. By the end of the session, she really grasped the difficult concepts of the perfect and pluperfect passive subjunctive and was translating these with excellent speed and accuracy. Additionally, at the end of our session, we reviewed all 20 verb forms and she got every one correct. Congrats on a great lesson."
"The student and I worked on translating a passage that was a part of his homework. I am very pleased with how he is consistently improving his Latin. The next major step to take will be building his Latin vocabulary which can only be done through repetition and memorization"
"Good session this afternoon. We ended up doing an impromptu review of both Latin and English grammar. You fared fairly well with the material. We'll work more, and you'll get stronger in your command of the Latin you've covered so far."
