On Tuesday, the student and I completed another two essay annotations for her AP English class. She wrote down and completed all seven categories of responses required by her AP professor for each of these individual passages. As usual, the process involved reviewing rhetorical terms and examining the social, political, and cultural aspects surrounding each piece, both fiction and nonfiction. These are valuable skills that she will certainly need for her upcoming fall studies.

Our session consisted of the homework the student brought home from school. We worked on a list of vocabulary words and learned how to use them in sentences. With my help, she was able to create 3 paragraphs using the vocabulary terms the teacher has provided to him as his spelling words for the week. We learned how to use these new words, how to properly place them in sentences, defined them, and created a story for his homework, which also helped him learn how to spell them.

Our session yesterday was primarily concerned with rewriting some of the citations. Both the in-text and works cited citations for electronic sources needed to be reformatted, but the student and I were able to review most of them! There were two more citations that needed to be looked into: one was a video, and the other was a bio of Amara Tabor-Smith that no longer exists on the web. She will go back and make sure she has all the citational information she needs. She will also find another source that could tell her about Tabor-Smith. Before next time, she will redo these two citations and also start working on her abstract. During our next session we will also reorder the title page, abstract, and table of contents.

Our theme this session was penguins. We began by reviewing upper and lowercase letters and sounds with a penguin letter match. Then, I introduced two new word families, 'it' and 'at.' The student did a great job of finding which words belonged to each family. We will continue to work on letter sounds to better develop her phonemic and phonological awareness. We also watched an informational penguin video and created an All About Penguins book. She was incredibly attentive and focused throughout the session. She even asked about homework. I provided a few books and read alongs for her to use at home. I saw improvement in her willingness to try. She should continue to practice letter sounds and blending sounds together at home.

Our topic of discussion today was the DMV. We went over various pertinent vocabulary, questions, and answers that she will need when she goes to the DMV office. We went over the meanings of the Regulatory Signs, using the NCDOT DMW Website. We will continue with this topic in a role-playing fashion, as well go over traffic signs and more vocabulary concerning driving, licensing, and the DMV during our next session. She was motivated and inquisitive as to correctly learning new driving terminology, as well as how driving rules are different from Venezuela, Spain, and other parts of the USA.
