"In today's session the student and I worked on descriptive writing using food advertisements on packaging as our anchor texts. She enjoyed the activity. I will create a chart that she can use to start writing with more description. I will also introduce metaphor as a way to add more description to writing, too."
"1. We practiced manuscript and cursive handwriting. 2. The student wrote down Language Arts terms and their definitions. 3. He studied and then was quizzed on past vocabulary. 4. We discussed a narrative story and then a personal narrative; this is review. 5. We worked on a worksheet about introductory paragraphs. He was to read a title and pick the best introductory paragraph. Then, he had to read the second paragraph of an essay and choose which paragraph (among choices provided) would be the best introductory paragraph."
"As the first of two, this session was designed to provide the student with both a general impression, and a specific addressing of questions relating to practices of writing at the college level. Subjects of discussion included: assessing and corresponding to subject-, assignment-, and setting-specific reader expectations; tips on the gathering and organization of research material; note-taking strategies and time-saving study tools. With respect to questions regarding previous college essay prompts, free-writing strategies for quickly producing and organizing one's thoughts were discussed in the context of tailoring written responses to the demands of the reader and the task at hand. Short exercises implementing the methods and lessons provided concluded the session."
"As the student and I wrapped up our session for the school year, I've felt he really progressed when opening up about the topics he really enjoyed. He really felt the urge to write when the prompt was open-ended and a bit more on the creative side."
