Gilbert, AZ SAT Writing and Language tutoring
We spent the first hour on grammar and the second on critical reading and essay writing. With grammar, we focused on identifying sentence errors. The following concepts are those to which we dedicated the most time: -Pronoun case (singular/plural, subject/object), especially with comparison: for example, "I am better at running that she [is at running]." -Pronoun shift, especially between "one" and "you" -Pronoun ambiguity -- a tough one, since this grammatical error is fairly unique to the SAT! -Subject/verb agreement with subjects that use either/or, neither/nor, both/and, etc. -Verbs with irregular past/past participle forms -Idioms We spent some time working on inference questions for critical reading, as well. For the most part, the student is performing really well! With essay writing, we reviewed an essay she wrote. It was a very strong essay.

The student got a new book, so we attempted a reading and writing section in it. It was a lot more representative of SAT-type questions than the other book she was using. She only made a few mistakes in each section, and has shown a huge improvement in pace for both sections. We then did math. Our main focus left is getting her pacing and speed down in math so she can do problems quickly and correctly.

In today's session we worked through a whole practice test that the student had taken on her own. We have gone over all of the concepts that she does not understand and the strategies involved in how to start problems. However, she was having trouble knowing where to start in certain questions. Once I gave her a hint, she was able to solve those questions perfectly. We have been really focusing on that point for the couple of SAT sessions. It is about practicing a lot getting used to these concepts. Overall she has no trouble with the topics presented in the problems. In reading, Olivia has improved a lot in understanding main ideas and working with detailed lines in the passages. The questions she answers incorrectly are tone and inference questions which are the most difficult in the test, and we continued to focus on practicing the strategies used in those questions. I assigned her to do an additional practice test today to practice what we went over in our sessions and to get used to timed conditions.

In our third lesson, the student and I focused on the reading and math sections. For reading, we practiced another close reading of a passage. This time, we also looked at questions about the passage, but our focus remained on reading the passages well. For math, we looked at prime numbers, a concept she was unfamiliar with. We also discussed different question types and what sorts of words to look out for that tell you what kind of question you are answering. She is doing well so far understanding the concepts we've covered.

We went over grammar concepts. In general, the session went well, and I think we made a lot of progress in the student's use of certain punctuation. He needs more work on quotations, and I emailed him a relevant page about quotation rules from the "grammar book" website. Overall, great job!
