Session Summaries by ASPIRE Tutors

Gilbert, AZ ASPIRE tutoring
The student and I met for our first session of SAT tutoring. We spent most of the session reviewing a practice test the student had taken. She did okay on reading, but struggled on grammar. She will need to review the various rules that the grammar section tests her on. We also reviewed math, and she seemed to pick up on my corrections fairly quickly. When I had her do a math practice section, she performed better than she did on the pre-test. I gave her some practice sections for homework.

Today we addressed all sections of the ACT. The student had attempted an essay for homework. We discussed it together and I helped her write a stronger outline. I assured her that with more practice it will get easier to put together a strong essay in short periods of time. For homework, she will rewrite that essay. On the Math section, the student was able to answer most of the simpler word problems by herself, and needed help breaking down some of the more complicated problems. Overall, she needed less help than previously to complete the tougher problems. She is doing really well with Science. I pointed out that this is still improvement, as reading more carefully is an easier skill to acquire than critical reasoning about science. Today's reading passage went really well, too, and she seems to be getting the hang of the ACT.

We reviewed the reading comp practice the student did for homework. His accuracy has improved, and he seems to be more intuitive in terms of the types of questions posed, answers to avoid, etc. We went through a bit of the English section, but didn't work on it long as he displayed sound understanding of the grammar basics. We spent the rest of the session practicing problems that require a slightly subtle approach.

The student and I began this session by going over the math practice she had done as follow-up work to our previous session, and clearing up the questions she had about some of the problem types. We talked about ways to spot which skills a word problem requires, especially when it's function- or geometry-based, and especially when it describes a figure or graph without showing it. We also looked at some questions that are made easier by graphing even though they don't explicitly mention coordinates. After wrapping up our Math section review, we revisited the multiple-choice Writing section; in particular, we reviewed Identifying Sentence Errors and Improving Paragraphs questions. She has made excellent progress in all of the test sections that we've worked on together. As this was our last session before her SAT on Saturday, I wish her the very best of luck, and I look forward to helping her prepare for the ACT next week.

We talked about the student's goals and then went through two practice sections--one math, one CR--she had done in a test prep book. She said she struggles most with the comparative passages, so I encouraged her to treat the passages separately--read the first, answer any questions that are only about that passage; do the same with the second passage, and answer the comparison questions last. This lets you clarify the nuances of similarity and difference between each passage before trying to compare them.
