How can a GRE tutor help you?

The GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is taken by most students before they apply to graduate programs. There are a number of topics covered and tasks required. To test their analytical writing, students will be given two essays to write. The quantitative section will test their high school-level math skills, such as problem-solving and data interpretation. The verbal section consists of text completion, sentence equivalence, and critical reading questions. There may also be an additional experimental section, which is not graded, that tests out new questions that might be on a future version of the test. Your score is valid for five years, so this is a pretty important test. If you need a little help, why not look into private tutoring? For help connecting with GRE tutors in Gilbert, AZ, contact the educational directors at Varsity Tutors today.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Gilbert, AZ GRE tutoring
We covered the discrete questions of the verbal section today, primarily focusing on the strategy for the sentence equivalence and 3 answer multiple choice questions as both were giving the student a little trouble. We also looked at the analyze an argument section of the writing portion, and then switched over to math. As the test day is approaching we mostly went over specific problems where the student had gone wrong in an attempt to correct and learn from those mistakes.

The student came into the session with a list of subjects that he would like to cover. We began with percent questions, which he was already very strong in. We helped talk him through the process of converting a word problem into an equation to solve. We quickly switched to solid geometry. He already grasped the equations well. I showed him how to convert square or cubed units. In regards to divisibility and primes, we discussed finding prime factors as the key to solving more complex questions. In the probability section, we discussed when to multiply and when to add ("or" as a keyword). I also taught the student the permutations and combinations equations. In our next session, we will discuss graphs and standard deviation.

Today we edited several essays the student had written and had a discussion about the best way to write essays. Since the essay prompts are randomly selected and the instructions vary from prompt to prompt, I emphasized that the general approach should be a simple essay structure with intro and conclusion paragraphs and several supporting paragraphs where ideas are developed in detail. He will work on more essays from prompts on the website prior to our next meeting.

We began by discussing the diagnostic work that the student did. We worked through discrete verbal questions that he did, focusing on vocabulary techniques and etymologies. We will work on reading questions on Saturday of this week. I worked through functions/sequences and probability/combinatorics with him. I assigned 1-70 of the sentence completion questions, chapter 10 (sequences/series), and chapter 23 (probability/combinatorics).

Today, the student and I continued preparing for the Math section of the GRE. We focused entirely on geometry, with the first part of our session spent on circle problems and the latter spent on quadrilaterals. I was generally impressed by the ease with which she approached these problems. I suggested that she practice math over the weekend, and for our next session on Monday, we may stick to all math, or we may do some math and then transition into preparation for the verbal section of the test. As always, we will begin with any questions she has. I look forward to our next meeting.
