Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered reading today. We read one book and also covered sight words from flashcards that were provided at home. He had a great attitude today and he was able to finish the reading. For strategies, I broke down words that I saw him struggling with and asked him questions to work on reading comprehension as well. For next time, we discussed that I am going to use sight words and help him connect those with his readings. Hopefully this will help him a bit more with the reading as well! Overall, I would say this was a good tutoring session!"
"The student and I covered rhetorical devices, irony, and imagery based on the main device of pathos in a short story. He primarily needed help to express ideas related to these concepts. While he was able to readily identify the device, he needed help with defining their use on a deeper analytical level, as required in this level of writing. We will continue to work on that. He is an excellent student to work with, and has very good attitude towards the material, wanting to fully understand the concepts expressed. The session was conducted with Socratic discussion between me and the student, allowing him to develop ideas and concepts. The biggest win was allowing him to develop a better understanding of how to write, instead of spoon feeding basic requirements."
"The student and I covered the concepts of textual analysis and textual support for an essay thesis. He needed help using textual support for this thesis, and writing an effective conclusion, so we went over those in detail. We also reviewed the strategy of outlining an essay."
"The student and I covered the short a sound, and read the book he made last session several times, which included basic sight words. We studied 15-20 sight word flashcards. He understood the story, and is grasping the sight word cards. We will continue reviewing the same areas until he can read the words easily without error, as these words are only first grade level. Our goal is to get him reading at a second grade level."
"The student and I covered verb tenses in present, past, and future, as well as definitions. She had some trouble with deciphering tenses, so we practiced with stories, identifying every verb in the story and its tense. She reads very well. I encouraged her to take her time on his upcoming test, and double check her first answer, and to later show me her test after being graded, so that we can see what she needs help with in test taking."
"The student and I covered vocabulary for the first hour of the session. In the second hour, we covered some Biology topics. We worked on reaction energetics and enzymes."
