German Tutoring review by Chibuzo in Ypsilanti charter Township, MI
Today the student worked on geometry homework. It didn't take very long, so we made flashcards of the Spanish vocab words from yesterday's session. We have a color coding system that should help keep him organized. We will do more tomorrow.

The student and I looked at his worksheet for ser and ir in the preterite then worked on constructing sentences for a project that he needs to make up from earlier in the school year.

German Tutoring review by Lucia in Ypsilanti charter Township, MI
After he completed his Spanish homework for the night, we worked on the use of both regular and irregular verbs in the preterite tense such as ir, ser, hacer, dar and ver. He struggled in the beginning with some of the forms of ir, ser and hacer in the preterite tense. Although he struggled in the beginning by the end of the lesson he was able to conjugate all forms of these verbs correctly. We practiced the preterite tense by reviewing the full conjugation of the verbs through speaking, fill in the blank and translation activities. He has a quiz on this tomorrow and we will review vocabulary and the preterite tense in our next session before his test.

German Tutoring review by Carynne in Ypsilanti charter Township, MI
Today was my first session with the student, and we covered a few basics so I could gauge where he is at in regards to basic concepts that will help him improve in Spanish 2. We went over personal pronouns, -ar present tense verbs, accents, pronunciation, and syllables. I also had him translate some of his homework into English, which showed me that he should study basic prepositions, and words that will help him use context clues when reading new material. I could tell he has studied his vocabulary, which is always something great to see as a tutor. He showed me his stack of vocabulary, so I hope he keeps that habit throughout the semester. Even if he was shaky on some verb conjugations, it was obvious he remembers some basic rules, because he asked about stem-changing verbs. This should be a great background to really jump into grammar topics next session. I encouraged him to use a great online dictionary resource, and to also try and play a game online to help practice grammar. He really seemed to start grasping my spelling and pronunciation tips, and I think he was proud when he started seeing the patterns. I encouraged him to go back through homework and vocabulary to pick out those patterns to make studying easier. I really appreciated him being open to trying to learn a new concept, and being a responsive and active learner.

German Tutoring review by Chanel in Ypsilanti charter Township, MI
During this session, we started by discussing the student's progress in his Spanish class. He reports that he did really well on another Spanish exam! During this session, we discussed ser vs. estar in depth. This included when to use each as well as the conjugations of each. Even though this is a very challenging concept, he was able to do a good job picking up on the uses of ser and estar. We did several practice questions with these verbs and he did generally very well. Of course, this will require more practice to master the concept. I challenged him to learn the Chapter 2A vocab on his own, using the method that we have been using in our sessions (self-test technique). We will pick back up with ser/estar and 2A vocab in two weeks and with whatever material is new. The next chapter covers past tense (preterite) which is challenging, but I'm sure with hard work he will get it down!
