Session Summaries by German Tutors

German Tutoring review by William in Akron, OH
The student and I went over what went wrong on her last test, and then we went through what sorts of things she might want to write for her upcoming project. She seems to be getting it better. My recommendation is just lots of memorization, especially with remembering the gender of nouns, plural forms of nouns, and the correct past tense forms of irregular and strong verbs.

German Tutoring review by Annika in Akron, OH
Today, the student and I had our first session. We began with discussing our respective levels of German, and I explained where my German background comes from and my own strengths and weaknesses with the language so he would know what I can do as a tutor. Next, we asked one another about our work, interests and hobbies, and spoke about those topics in German. During the conversation, we occasionally stopped to make corrections or talk about the best word choice. He is a great speaker; he will mostly need conversational practice to hone his grammar and sound more "natural."

German Tutoring review by Connie in Akron, OH
This was the first session I had with Student 1 since school resumed. Now that he is in the seventh grade, I asked him some questions in German about how he likes his classes, what classes he is taking this year, and how many classes he is taking. We reviewed a PowerPoint deck together that I created to show various school subjects and what the German equivalent is for each. I adjusted the slides during the session to incorporate courses he was taking such as "spoken word," which I translated as "poetry," for example. We wrapped up the session by reviewing his homework from two weeks prior and correcting his answers for nominative/accusative fill-in-the-blanks in sentence form. 9/14-- This was the first session I had with Student 2 since she started her senior year in high school. We also went over the PowerPoint deck that I created to learn school subject vocabulary. I added additional slides for her specific courses this year as well. I also reviewed additional school terminology with her, including phrases or words for classroom equipment and study materials.

German Tutoring review by Sayaka in Akron, OH
We used the same website to learn more grammar and vocabulary. The rest of the time, we worked on making conversation, which the student did very well, even after a few breaks from sessions. We will continue to practice more conversation next time.

German Tutoring review by Aleksey in Akron, OH
We reviewed telling time, telling your age, the school year, and telling ethnicity. We learned the present tense positive and negative conjugations of polite words, as well as their past tense counterparts. We then went over some basic verbs: eat, drink, go, come, see, and is. We also covered the vocabulary on page 38, and we paused on certain words I felt need more explanation or had nuances. I left the student with workbook pages 14 and 15 for extra Hiragana practice with numbers and telling time.

German Tutoring review by Alisa in Akron, OH
Covered gerunds and infinitives, which she seemed to grasp pretty easily once I broke it down. In terms of strategies, we discussed and agreed that it would be easier for her if I wrote down my examples in the text box so that she could see them rather than just listening to me speak. We also discussed how to integrate more speaking practice into our sessions to give her a way to boost her confidence.
