Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did very well today. We worked on a multiplication math facts warm-up for 7 minutes. Although he was not familiar with this method, he still was able to work through most of his facts. We will continue with this warm-up, and the goal is to complete the facts within 7 minutes or better. On the math problems, the student did well with mental math and reasoning in his head. We will work on organizing his notes and writing down the information, which will help when we work on more challenging problems. For reading and word analysis, we will practice a set of words, using word roots, prefixes, and suffixes to find synonyms and antonyms. I suggested the ISEE prep book to assist with strategies and practice on math problems. Overall, the student did well today."
"The student had trouble reading the letters p, b, and d. Also, she couldn't remember all of her vowels, so I wrote those down for her on a card. I also gave her word associations for each vowel to help her remember them. She told me that she had trouble being able to read "I'd." I gave her homework in her practice book. In math, we used the addition cards, and she couldn't remember 2+5, 1+6, 4+3, 7+1, and 5+1. I assigned homework for her to practice 2+5 and 4+3. We reviewed the multiples of 7 again. I also taught her the series of numbers when adding one to each one, e.g., 1+1-2 and 2+1=3 to help her with some of her addition. I assigned practice with writing the number 2, as she is still not making it correctly. She had a little trouble remembering how to read the number 6. I emphasized how important it is for her to "pay attention" in class. I also mentioned this to her mom before I left. We will continue to work on this next session."
"The student has been selected to take Pre-Algebra in 6th grade this year, so I will be looking for a workbook that practices concepts as well as application to get a jump on things. Today, we did another couple problems from his Singapore workbook. We went over the problems, and he solved them using Singapore diagrams and wrote out an equation to represent the problem."
"The student has been working on the sixth grade math curriculum. Today we focused on ratio and proportion. She is doing well in this area, as her multiplication facts are getting stronger every session. In addition, she worked on mapping coordinates. She likes this and is very systematic in her approach. She also worked on skills related to integers, which came easily to her. She has the final review section for the fifth grade book, which I am encouraging her to work on for at least 30 minutes per day as she prepares for the entry level assessment for the school year."
"The student has begun a new school year, and his current math teacher expects him to show all of his work. We covered definitions, including congruent, difference, sum, quotient, product, mean, median, mode, and range. He also had to convert into different units, like pounds to tons, pints to cups, and miles to yards. He remembered most of the concepts. He did well with the arithmetic and the word problems."
"The student has blossomed into a confident, excited, and determined student when it comes to his learning. He has been working extra hard studying his math facts. He has become an expert on numerous math topics. We completed multiplication mastery up to the 7s. We also worked on problem solving strategies. We have been covering so many things, and I am proud to say that I am honored to be his tutor. It is more than just a student/tutor relationship, we have bonded."
