"I was so happy to hear that the student passed her test!! Congratulations!! Today we were able to start on her new topic: quadratics. These are the equations that always have an x^2 (x squared). These equations also will always make a parabola: A "u" shaped graph or "n" shaped graph. We were able to zoom through two sections of this unit which was wonderful! She remembers a lot from last time and it definitely helped us with timing. For homework I have asked her to finish the questions that require her to find points for the graph. We did a few together, and she understood the process well but still needs to practice so that she can continue to do well."
"I went over what the student missed on her recent assignments with her. They were simple mistakes that could have been avoided if she was more careful. We did more sample problems to check for understanding and mastery, and we did some sample pre-algebra problems on the online learning platform website. We reviewed rational vs. irrational numbers, order of operations, multiplying and dividing rational numbers, integer addition and subtraction, using a number line, and solving one variable equations. She received some more practice tests to do over the weekend to sharpen her skills."
"I went through their homework and made sure that they knew how to translate graphs. Next we moved to changing the standard form of the quadratic to the vertex form and reviewed axis of symmetry, vertex, etc. I basically made a set of instructions for them that they can use to go from the standard to the vertex form reliably without making a mistake."
"I worked with 2 students on function manipulations: finding [f(x+h) - f(x)] / h from various f(x) equations, finding fog(x), etc. Students were a bit confused on incorporating (x + h) for every x, and remembering to distribute. I provided a lot of practice examples, as well as refreshers on squaring monomials, fraction addition w/ monomials + polynomials, etc.. After which, the students felt more comfortable. In general, students were solid on algebraic simplification, but needed some review on algebraic operations. By the end of the session, students were solving function manipulation problems without my help; a great session! The two students I worked with were extremely motivated."
"I worked with both the student and his younger brother. Today the student and I reviewed linear equations, graphs, and word problems. With the younger boy I focused specifically on word problems. Both students are very quick and talented."
"I worked with her to answer the questions to a high school assessment passage. I also helped her draft a story with a beginning, middle, end, and also a problem/solution. She did well in drafting but just needed some scaffolding with adding details to her story."
