Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Georgetown, TX Writing tutoring
The student did not have specific homework, so we worked together on writing about his favorite place to visit. Again, we worked with a combination of brainstorming and outlines. Both creating a thesis and outline for the essay overall and for each paragraph within the essay. The student is improving at developing and supporting ideas in his writing.

The student discussed what kinds of writing he's doing in all of his classes (analytical writing in English class and document-based responses in History). He also described the book that he is currently reading in his English class -- an epic poem/story from Babylon. After that I had the student work on a writing exercise where he was correcting a fictional paragraph in order to make it better. Before he began I asked him to describe the positive and negative aspects to the paragraph and to describe to me the ways in which it could be improved in order to enhance the sense of suspense. After that, I had him actually write and improve the paragraph, encouraging him to continuously add more details and vary his sentence length to keep it interesting.

The student had an assignment for a job description. We had also been working on a piece on chess, so we took that and reworked it for this one. His mother suggested we do two hours this session. We worked on the chess piece and focused on revision and descriptive language.

Today, we focused primarily on the AP World History DBQ, although we did discuss some more general writing tips as well. We talked about how to create essays that meet both his teacher's expectations and the actual AP rubric. We also went over the basic structure of an essay. He has a good grasp on the introduction and conclusion. He is going to practice by writing a DBQ this week based off the pre-writing we did at the end of the session today. Next week, we're going to dig into different ways of looking at primary source documents as we continue to work on his technique.

We went over some vocabulary that the student had worked on Sunday. We then spent most of our time going over the principles of the five paragraph essay and how to revise an essay that the student was working on for his English class. Hopefully what we covered will be helpful for both his English class and his SAT essay.

We had a much better session this time. I read all of the issues of the comics he was writing about, so we spent less time discussing what that was about and more time about the writing. He had a peer review, which gave him some valuable comments and some not so valuable comments. I encouraged him to use his best judgement when choosing which comments from peer review to pay attention to. His transitions are still pretty rough, but he is able to recognize that this is a weakness. He still needs to work on varying sentence structure to avoid sounding repetitive with his writing. I think his draft is much better than the first one he showed me, though, so it's good to see progress. He will be sending me another revised copy to me tonight or tomorrow, and he'll let me know when he's free for another session.
