Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

Georgetown, TX ISEE tutoring
We did a math practice section of the ISEE lower level. The student did well, scoring about 70 percent. He needs to learn to skip problems that are causing him trouble and finish all the ones that he finds easy first. He is using the practice book and continues to study the vocabulary and reading material I assigned to him. I have no concerns with this session.

Today we reviewed concepts from the math/quantitative sections. The student showed excellent recollection of the properties of arithmetic that we've been reviewing, as well as operations with fractions, order of operations, and probability. We discussed ways to become more accurate and efficient with problems using exponents and simplifying fractions. We finished by completing practice problems over vocab questions on the reading section, focusing specifically on identifying context clues. He should complete practice sections, on a timer, from his ISEE prep book and bring his scores to our next meeting.

Today we finished the last of the school entrance questions-"Why do you want to attend, and what about our mission statement appeals to you?". We also worked through a particularly difficult paragraph on why education is important to the student. She has been stuck on this passage for a while now, but after three rewrites this week, it finally clicked. She could see the improvement too, which was a great moment for both of us.

Georgetown, TX ISEE tutoring
During today's session, the student and I worked on the math and quantitative sections of the ISEE. His math skills are improving, so I decided to move up a level to 6th and 7th grade math problems. He was able to complete 40/50 problems, and he did them correctly. He was also able to complete some of the problems that I wasn't sure he knew how to solve. The biggest obstacle will be the geometry questions. He understands the concepts once explained to him, but he has little previous knowledge of them. For the next session, we will work on geometry problems.
