Session Summaries by Geometry Tutors

Geometry Tutoring review by Maroun in Pawtucket, RI
First it was good to hear that the student received 100% on his last 3 quizzes and that out of all 5 quizzes for Chapter 8, he only missed 1 problem on two different quizzes. He seems to be grasping the material of this chapter much better. Today we worked on getting him ready for his Chapter 8 test tomorrow. About half the session was spent on a take-home project exercise that has the same weight as a test. It was a challenging problem of dividing up a backyard into 7 different polygons, and then finding their respective areas in order to figure out the total area of the backyard. It was a good exercise encompassing the majority of Chapter 8. The student had most of it done on his own with minimal errors. We worked on how to work slowly through a problem and pay attention to detail to avoid such errors. The remainder of the session was spent on the 40 problems in the Chapter 8 Review section. Furthermore, we discussed a few preparations for tomorrow's test which included: memorizing certain formulas, writing out the problem step by step including the formula so it is easier to seek out the missing variable, being careful with the details, and checking his work.

Geometry Tutoring review by Justin in Pawtucket, RI
We covered geometry and more specifically writing proofs using various congruence theorems and assorted properties and definitions such as using the five triangle congruence theorems, parallel line theorems, specific triangle definitions, midpoint definitions, etc. The student was mostly struggling through understanding the thought-process in how to write the proofs or how to use the given information to formulate a plan of action to writing the proof that proves the statement the question is asking. After some practice, the student stated he felt more confident in his abilities to solving them, but still wants more practice with writing them. As for study strategies, I suggested that he always approach the problem in many different ways as well as reminding him that before he could use the Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC) theorem, that first he must prove that the triangles are congruent. The student still has his entire homework packet to finish and the problems he did under my supervision showed vast improvement and confidence in his ability to solve the proofs. In our last session, the student was studying for a geometry makeup exam and scored vastly better than his first attempt, scoring a 95% on his makeup exam.

Geometry Tutoring review by Matjaz in Pawtucket, RI
We covered reduced Pythagorean triangles. The student had a very solid grasp of the subject and was able to complete the assignment with ease and confidence. She is extremely well organized and has a good sense of space and time. She is conscious of preparing the workspace, and has a good feel for the amount of time it should take to complete an assignment. Some examples were left for the students to complete at a later point. Overall, the student's confidence and ability in the subject seems to be increasing.

Geometry Tutoring review by Kenneth in Pawtucket, RI
This session we worked on a new concept for him, lateral area and surface area of prisms. The student worked on and completed his homework assignment. During the assignment, I showed him how to find the parts of the figure that he needed to input into the equation to find lateral and or surface area of each object. He felt very comfortable with the concept and stated that he understood what to do.

Last night, the student and I practiced finding surface areas and volumes of rectangular, triangular, and regular hexagonal prisms, right cylinders, and spheres. For the most part, he had no trouble with these new formulas, though I did need to remind him of how to find the area of a regular hexagon. We had some extra time after finishing the assignment, so we looked ahead at upcoming material on pyramids and cones.

Geometry Tutoring review by Daniel in Pawtucket, RI
The student and I reviewed special triangles, as we did last week. He really appears to have a strong grasp on the current unit (quadrilaterals), so we did not put too much focus on the topic. I discovered that the student has some problems in thinking about ratios, so we drilled this during our session. I will send him practice problems before the next session so that he can solve them with more confidence. During the session, I instructed him on the ideal timespan for studying. That is, reading ahead, reviewing a day's material, and studying before a test. I will, as discussed, give him these sorts of general studying tips throughout our sessions.
