Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered poetry for the student's English class. His assignment was to compose three original poems that meet the requirements of stanza and rhyming structure he has studied in his class. He completed two poems and left the third one for homework and extra practice. The student's grade on his last essay indicated significant improvement over grades from earlier in the semester."
"She had a research paper assigned to her from one of her classes that was a little tricky to start on analyzing an historical speech. We had a lot of fun putting it together, and she is very talented in her ability to analyze. I believe we completed most of it, though I did assure her we could continue in dialogue about it throughout the weekend."
"Our session was focused entirely on her British literature course. For most of the session, I helped her create an outline required in advance of tomorrow's in-class writing assignment, based on "The Picture of Dorian Gray." When prompted and guided, she worked through the process and expressed herself well. She organized her ideas and several quotations as needed for tomorrow. I believe she was pleased with her accomplishments today."
"Today my session with the student was focused on the aspects of his new school schedule and how his different teachers will be expecting him to use writing in his classes. His first writing assignment for the school year was focused on poetry, so we spent our time today covering the basics of poetry and how it can be written and performed when needed. By the time we meet for our next session, he will have a better idea of what ways he will be using writing in his classes in the coming months. Our sessions will be planned based on his needs throughout this semester."
"Today Student 1 worked on writing and Student 2 worked on math. For school, Student 1 wrote an autobiographical pamphlet about important events in his life. He chose to write about his birth, his first video game, his sister's birth, and the first time he went on a cruise ship. He needed some prompting to provide additional details and descriptive imagery, but after that was able to write interesting stories. Student 2 had a math worksheet on place values and decimals to work on. She is showing good progress in understanding the underlying concepts. I gave her an extra math worksheet with practice problems to work on after I left, and to return to me on Tuesday."
"Today the student and I completed the last revision of his essay. He will make those revisions and turn in his final product on Sunday. We also began our discussion of "The Light Between Oceans." The student lit up and engaged in our discussion of the novel. On Sunday we will focus the whole of our time to discussion the moral choices made in "The Light Between Oceans.""
