Lydia: South Park tutor
Certified Tutor
I started in education after many years as a writer, drafting articles and ghostwriting books for a writing agency. I have been featured online and in print in magazines, newspapers, and books. While I tutor in numerous subjects, I especially have a passion for literacy.
My first introduction to elementary education was when I decided to serve my local community and joined AmeriCorps. This helped me find my passion for working with youth. During my time as an AmeriCorps Tutor, I worked with K-3, was nominated for a national award, and was awarded a place on the Virginia Volunteerism Honor Roll.
While working, I volunteered with a local non-profit supporting students with dyslexia, which was one of my most rewarding experiences.
After 2 years with an educational non-profit focused on providing literacy instruction for children in Title I schools, I returned to education as a classroom teacher. I served as a Long-Term Kindergarten Substitute Teacher, independently running a class of 20. This guided me to enroll at WGU in their BA, Special Education, and Elementary Education (Dual Licensure) program. During the school year, I offered small-group literacy instruction to 38 students daily at the school I served and provided after-school tutoring.
Supporting students so they can succeed has been and will always be why I love education.
