I have been working in education for nearly 15 years, first as an elementary school teacher, then an English Language Learner Specialist, and most recently as a college and guidance counselor. My experience and training working with adolescents has solidified my passion for supporting students with their academic, social-emotional, and career goals.
I graduated from the University of Richmond, where I studied Spanish and Elementary Education. After graduating and earning my teaching license, I moved to Cusco, Peru. I was excited about the prospect of improving my own Spanish skills while also working with students in a completely new and exciting culture. In Peru I taught English as a Foreign Language to teenagers and adults, and worked with many on taking English exams and getting careers in English speaking industries. When I returned to the United States, one of my first teaching positions was in a psychiatric facility for children ages five to eighteen. Working with these students gave me my first look into the effect that mental health has on academic success. I worked with students to prepare them both academically and emotionally to return to school. I then spent many years teaching English as a Second Language to students ages 3 to 15. I worked with students from many different cultural, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In this role I delivered direct English Language instruction, as well as pushed into classrooms to support my students, which gave me experience teaching all subject areas in grades pre-K through 8th.
During this time I earned my School Counseling degree through Seton Hall University. I now work with high school students and support them both academically and emotionally. I spend a lot of time working with students to improve their executive functioning skills, help with organization and prioritizing school work, and helping students advocate for themselves with teachers. I also work closely with students on their post-grad planning. I review and edit college applications, work with students on their personal statements, help write students' resumes, and counsel students on their future planning.
I am passionate about education and believe that each student learns differently. I love getting to know each of my unique students and supporting them in forging their own path forward.
