I love communicating well, and I love sharing what I know with others. I'm passionate about helping others grow and enjoy the fruits of their labor. That passion has fueled my history working in church ministry, tutoring English Composition students, and teaching various types of musical lessons. I have a bachelor's degree from Huntington University in Indiana, and I've spent time helping my wife and some of our friends to write more clearly as they pursued their master's and doctoral degrees as well. I thoroughly enjoy talking about music and teaching others how to better understand Western music, whether in terms of deeper theory or something as simple as how to transpose and use tools like a guitar capo. Whenever I teach, I try to be practical and applicable. Lessons are more fulfilling when they help you achieve something, even if it's merely personal satisfaction like playing a song for family after Thanksgiving dinner. As such, I believe that any sort of lesson ought to chase specific goals discussed and set together between tutor and student. Foundational skills (such as writing for your target audience or guitar scales) are critical and aren't always fun, but they feed into long-term goals and can be paired with smaller, more achievable goals to hold interest and find small wins for the student's encouragement.
