To begin the section, the student and I reviewed the final concept that we had not touched. We began working on nuclear chemistry and finished the session reviewing any problems that she did not understand. After the session I informed her that she could text or email me any problems she had with her material.

The student and I continued our work with chemistry. We finished up working with redox reactions and figuring out the oxidizing and reducing agent and also figuring out oxidation number. We then started on a review worksheet that went over all of the concepts we've been reviewing on these past couple of sessions. We worked on writing net ionic equations, finding the oxidation number given a compound and also given a reaction. I also taught her about the different types of reactions that can occur (decomposition, neutralization, precipitation, etc.). She did very well on this worksheet and completed the whole thing with little of my help.

Today, we worked on chromosomal inheritance. From linked to unlinked genes and crossing over, we studied how alleles are passed on to offspring. In addition, we worked on pedigree and Punnett squares to verify our knowledge on inheritance. She is an exceptional student who is very hardworking. I have no doubt she is going to have a successful time at college next year.

The student and I reviewed chapter 8: introduction to biochemistry. We completed dozens of online problems and discussed biochemistry and enzymes in great detail. I also reviewed the laws of thermo and how they apply to living systems. Lastly, we explored enzyme inhibitors and their mechanisms of action. She has done very well and has a good grasp of the material.

We covered the sections of evolution, Hardy-Weinberg, and types of mutations for variations in species. The student was struggling with some of the vocabulary terms, but once we went through them, she had a good grasp of them. She was very appreciative of the material covered today. She is on winter break and will be having a test in January when school starts again. She is starting to make connections and similarities between the chapters.

We talked a bit about the tests this week. The student thought they had been hard, as we expected. We discussed the schedule for the next couple of weeks, and agreed to meet tomorrow, then not for two weeks. Then she was concerned about an assignment after the break, about a review of the previous units, so I put together some review problems, concentrating on multiple units in one problem since she had said that she was sometimes not sure what method to use on a problem. She seemed much more clear on it at the end of the session.
