Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Lizeth in Reading
Today, we were working on how to start a conversation just about thinking in a simple word and also how to change conversations in seconds. We started with a warm up with the game "basta," after that, the student chose a letter, and he told me a word with that letter. Once we had the word, I had talk about it for 5 minutes and then change the topic. He did well. He had a couple of new words; he is more fluent now and he doesn't take too long to answer a question or to express his ideas. He is very positive and willing to learn more and more. He requested extra practice, so I am going to send him some activities to work with.

Today, we went over a few topics in Biology that the student will be learning tomorrow. Since we have caught up on material from the previous lesson, I stressed the importance of now trying to get ahead with material to make it easier to learn while in the classroom. We went over homeostasis, blood sugar control, and the interaction of several organ systems to help transport nutrients and oxygen. We also discussed an overall balance and lifestyle for healthy living. The student seems interested in the topic when it is relatable to everyday life, so I will try in our future lessons to associate topics with activities of daily living. We are still awaiting results from his most recent Spanish exam.

The student completed a series of worksheets on vocabulary (place names, primarily) for his new chapter. After completing the worksheets, we reviewed the vocabulary in preparation for the quiz that he has on it tomorrow. We also worked through a grammatical point that is a bit challenging - the combining of certain articles and masculine prepositions. In concluding the session he seemed well prepared for his quiz. If he can review a bit more before he has to take it, even better.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Shalon in Reading
The student and I went over a homework paragraph that she needed a little help on. She had to fill in the blanks with the correct conjugation using preterite and imperfect verb tenses. We discussed the reasons for selecting each verb tense when she selected them. We also discussed pronunciation. By the end she completed the paragraph, was comfortable with her answers, and was also able to explain why each tense was selected for each blank. She also did very well in reading the entire paragraph back to me in Spanish using near perfect pronunciation!

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by María Paz in Reading
This was our very first session. The student seemed enthusiastic and ready to learn Spanish. He knows some words in Spanish and we are trying to incorporate some grammar. Grammar can be intimidating and might make someone lose interest in learning. However, I am trying to incorporate his interests and love for nature into this new process. Today we learned a about the vowels, theirs sound, nature and colors. For the vowels, he came up with one animal for each vowel. He drew pictures for each vowel as well. We learned about dolphins and what they like to do. He wrote down a few verbs associated with the animal. For example: Dolphins jump, swim, hunt. We repeated what they do, and then I asked what other animals do those things? Later, we watch a video on nature. We learned a little about lions and turtles. After watching the film we wrote down whatever we remembered from it. The session was lively, engaging, and productive throughout the session.
