HSPT Language Skills Tutoring FAQ
The High School Placement Test, or HPST, includes a Language Skills section to enable private high schools to evaluate how well a student understands the mechanics of the English language. Because the HSPT is meant to comprehensively assess your child's academic abilities, it is not unusual for your student to find some aspects of this exam harder than others. The Language Skills section -- with its emphasis on composition, grammar, spelling, and usage -- can be a difficult area for many individuals. If your child is reviewing for the HSPT and hopes to improve their score on the Language Skills section, consider contacting Varsity Tutors and letting us help you connect with an HSPT Language Skills tutor anywhere in the nation. A skilled HSPT Language Skills tutor can help your child shore up their language skills before test day and approach the section with confidence.
During HSPT Language Skills tutoring, your child's instructor can work with them to identify the particular areas in which they could most benefit from extra practice and review. Does your student have trouble with , placement? Do they struggle to select the proper spelling of a term? By initially identifying these areas of difficulty, your child's tutor can then create an individualized learning plan, designed to target their personal weaknesses. All lessons can be tailored to your student's learning style in order to maximize their success on the HSPT Language Skills section, making lessons as effective as possible.
While HSPT Language Skills tutoring can help your child strengthen any weak areas of their academic understanding, tutoring can also help your student learn useful test-taking strategies specifically geared toward the HSPT Language Skills section. By learning how to eliminate and predict possible answers, as well as how to hear grammatical mistakes within a sentence or passage, your child can garner a skill set ideal for their HSPT success.
Your student's tutor can help them combine strengthened academic skills with proven test-taking strategies, ultimately combining these skills to help your child achieve the highest HSPT Language Skills score possible. Tutors understand that you and your child are busy. Between extracurricular activities and other academic responsibilities, fitting in HSPT Language Skills tutoring can seem impossible. All instructors set their own schedules, allowing them to be flexible and to work to accommodate the most preferred meeting time and place. Are multiple classes and extracurricular activities filling your student's time? That can be a challenge, but they don't have to miss out on valuable one-on-one instruction time, because each tutor is extremely flexible. They can also choose a meeting place, or you can set up room at home so your child can be most comfortable and at ease with the lessons. Plus, the Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice.
Instructors begin with proven assessment strategies, which helps them custom-tailor the lessons they will provide your student with. There will be assignments along the way, but rather than the work being focused on a class full of people, these will be based on your child's capabilities. The tutor will more easily be able to track their progress. Valuable practice is included as well; no person can truly master the English language if they don't receive the proper instruction and personalized assistance. Plus, tutoring is individualized, efficient, and comforting for the most nervous and shy of students. HSPT Language Skills tutoring should be a convenient, stress-free part of your student's week. Varsity Tutors makes experienced, independent instructors more accessible than ever before.

Recent HSPT Language Skills Tutoring Session Notes
We reviewed the essay rewrite (much improved) and math problems I assigned for homework. The student and I worked through math for most of the session and then I had her try synonyms that we'll review next time.
We did an overview of all the sections of the ACT, including the writing section, and a plan for their next month and a half studying before the test. There are still some struggles occasionally with the reading and science, but I think it will just be important that they get good rest and really concentrate and pace themselves when it comes to the real thing.
The student and I focused on reading and science during our session. He did really well with reading but less so with science. These were just the intro chapters though, so he has a lot of time and practice ahead of him to improve his confidence and skills.
This was my first meeting with the student , so we looked at her score report, discussed her future plans and her score goal for re-taking the test. We worked through a reading section together, and reviewed some basic strategies for each type of reading question.
We used a new book today to go over some unfamiliar math concepts such as geometry and trig. The student will need to brush up on some of this because he misses the most in this section which significantly lowers his math score. The new book seems to be really helpful.
